Winchester 1885 "Trapper" in 30/40 Krag

I've really been enjoying this rifle and thought I would throw up a couple
of pics of it. It's turned out to be a more fun and versatile rifle that I
thought it would be. Very accurate and handles nice. 7 lb 6oz in weight total with Weaver K2.5 scope. This is my hunter for this season.

Nice. I was lucky enough to shoot an old timer's 30-40 Krag rifle recently. I really liked it, even though it was as tall as I am. The one I shot was of the old military type with the box magazine on the side. Refinished and reblued 60 years ago, the thing looked practically brand new.
 
I wouldn't mind a single shot in 30-30, or even a .243 for a little deer hunting and paper shredding. Single shot's are about the most beautiful rifles. I would be afraid I'd muck'em up if I used them though.
 
I have two low wall rifles, a Winchester in 22 LR, and a Browning in 22 hornet, I love them both and wouldn't get rid of either one. I'd like to get another Browning in a bit higher caliber.
 
I am a Winchester/Browning Hi-Wall fan in general...but man...those Schnabel front guards...ah well...


30-40 is one of my caliber Unicorns. Still looking for one.

But my single shot rifle Unicorn has to be a Sharps in 45-110.

Next to that would be a Trapdoor in 45-70. Prefer replicas in both cases as I don't have a huge dowry to pull from. :)

16 or 18" barrel?

I am also curious as to the diet you feed that 30-40? Handloads? What bullet size and type?
 
A few years ago I hunted elk with a man who had an 1885 in 30-40. He had the papers that showed the rifle had been rebarreled by Winchester in 1929 from its original 40-82 calibre. I watched him do a one shot kill on a cow at a paced 320 steps. Used a tang sight set up that was original to the rifle. I have a #1 and an original Rolling Block and several modern single shots. Good guns.
 
I promised myself I would not bid on this no matter how low it goes. Handi rifle in .30-30, looks very nice and currently at $130 no reserve. And I have no idea who the seller is.

I have one of those. It's a great rifle. I love it.
 
I see a lot of Uberti replicas of the High Wall for sale and they are usually listed at a couple hundred dollars less than the Browning/Winchester models, and they usually have "color case-hardened" frames.

They $ savings is tempting .. however .. I've had four different Uberti replica handguns with "color case-hardened" frames (3 were black powder models and 1 is a smokeless powder model) and on every one of them "color case-hardening" faded to a homely gray/dull silver within three or four months.:fire: And it wasn't due to exposure to black powder because two of them did it before I got a chance to fire them.

I don't know of anyone else who has had the same trouble with Uberti's "color case-hardening" but wanted to raise a flag for anyone thinking of sinking $1000 or so in a single-shot rifle.

The barrel is 16.5 inches. I'm using 165 grain Accubonds over 47 grains
of IMR4064 for 2550 fps.

This rifle is (more or less) a current offering. I picked it up off of Gunbroker
about 6 weeks ago. I thought the "trapper" model was just a spawn
of someone's imagination, but after reading a book about the 1885 I found
that Winchester did make a rifle very similar to this one called a Lightweight Carbine. It had a 15 inch barrel, which would be illegal if produced now,
hence this Miroku/Winchester version has a 16.5 inch barrel. This rifle is part of a
special run made for Davidson's a few years ago. But they have not all sold
out yet. Still a few left.

I'm posting a pic of another of my favorite 1885's. This is a Traditional
Hunter model in 30-30 Winchester. This one is a shooter too. My
favorite load on this one is with 125 gr Ballistic Tips.

They are fun, I'll be hunting with my Browning 1885 in 45-70 this weekend, it's the tang sight model so no optics on it though.
 
what is cool is, some states, with muzzle loader seasons, will let you use a single shot centerfire, as long as the cal is a 30 cal or bigger, and a break bbl single shot.
 
Whats the deal with Rossi rifles?
I hear lots about the NEF handi rifles (most all i hear about them is good) and i've been hankering for a new rifle, and the handi-rifle seems to check out all of my needs: accurate, reliable, easy to clean, iron sights, etc.

As a matter of fact, I do love SS rifles.

Thanks for sharing yours. It's VERY cool. I like the 30-40 cartridge and the 20mm scope looks good on that type of rifle.

Hey Shawnee --


That 30/30 is a Browning named 1885 Traditional Hunter. It was also
made by Miroku in Japan. These were built in the mid to late 90's
and are tough to find. This is only the third one I've seen since
I've had the single shot bug.

The Browning TH's had a little better grade of wood on them than
the later Winchester stamped guns. But the build quality is superb
on both.

They also made some "Low Wall" 1885's. I have a Traditional Hunter
in 44 magnum and a Sporter in 260 Remington. These are very light
and elegant rifles and make very nice field carry guns.
