Browsing vids on youtube and came across this. I dont know if its been brought up already or not but I know the idea has been discussed. My question is where in the U.S. is it even legal to hunt big game with a rimfire?? (I'm assuming its in the U.S. because thats where the guy who posted the vid is from)

Like I said in the post I hope all their guns are taken away and they loose their hunting licenses for life.
 
From looking at his webpage he lives on an indian reservation for what its worth.

Although probably not illegal :fire:
 
What a dummy! If you click on his name you can ID his high school (Heart Butte, Montana) and the location where he shot the animal (Pryor Mountain). Slam dunk conviction!
 
I've got no comment on the morality/ethics of the shot. I hope this doesn't seem hijack-ish, but it brings up a question I've been meaning to ask [Mods: if this is indeed a hijack, delete it.]

Here in SC, the hunting regs say you may only hunt boar (and coyote if I remember right) after sunset with either a pistol (any caliber) or a rimfire. Rimfire for boar :what:?!?!? What is the logic in that legislation??

I don't hunt, but read through the regs which where in the same DNR publication with the fishing regs. ...I'll amend that by saying I only hunt with a fly rod and release my quarry to meet again another day. Nothing personal whatsoever against hunting, and IMHO all the feral hogs should be killed by any means available, "humane" or not.
 
We have alot of native americans in my area, but on the reserve or not they still have to abide by the rules of which firearm is legal to hunt with. They just dont have to follow open season or quantity limits if I remember right. But thats here.. could very well be a different story where ever this video is made.
 
That was a horrible thing to do, it makes it even worse that he posted it for everybody to see. I bet he was real proud of that shot.:fire::cuss:

So much for head/neck shots either being fatal or a miss. This isn't to far off of the guys who insist that the .223 is GREAT deer medicine. To little is to little.
 
I think caliber choice is a bigger factor than shot placement here. Make that shot with a deer rifle and it would be a MUCH different story.

I don't own a 17 HMR but I have shot them. At 40 yards the 17gr ballistic tip bullet blew up on the cinder block pieces without breaking them. I imagine a deer skull wouldn't be much different, especially at any kind of distance. I bet they are further than 40 yards from that buck.

Agreed, I have a .17 HMR and its an awesome small game/target gun. But that is all its good for. I dont think I'd trust it on anything bigger than a large fox at a resonable distance. I was pretty surprised to come across this vid. I dont know if the person posting the vid is the shooter or the camera man, either way his involvement at all is shameful enough. It doesnt sound like this is the first time they've done this either.
 
My little savage 17 HMR is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot, but I would never,ever,ever dream of trying head shot hunting with it, that is just plain stupid, and I think all these AR guys that are trying to use a .223 as a deer round need their head checked too. If I were just that good to place my shot right behind the ear of a moveing deer at 200 yards every time I sure would not be talking about it on the web because every wannabe sniper will think that is some kind of bragging rights, and many deer will suffer slow deaths because of it. One guy on this forum was actualy recomending a 223 Vmax bullet for deer hunting......A FRAGMENTING VARMINT BULLET! Those have half the penatration of an old 22LR. Yall this is not a test of who can use the smallest or most fragile bullet and still recover your game, use common sence here, .243 85gr should be your minimum on any deer over a hundred pounds. 25-06 makes a more practical minimum in big deer country especaly if longer shots are in the mix. I left this jerk a nice little message in the comments section.

I did'nt wathc the vid, But as one poster said rimfire are used for Hogs & yoties as thet are considerd Small game in FL. You can shoot hogs durrind small game season, But defently UNETHICAL IMO ! The deer I shot only takes one round and they are DRT ; )PS I could have shot a little Doe tis evening As I chose not to, No room in the freezers Plus seen a nice BIG Tom Bobcat ; )

I didn't watch the video. I don't think I need too, to figure out what happens in it.
A friend of mine got a deer this year. When was field dressing it he found 7 to 9 bullets in the back hip area of the deer. He is thinking they were .22 rounds. Some people are dumber then crap on a log.
Sorry if I didn't use the right terms. I am new to shooting and I have never been hunting. I hope to go hunting in the next few years.
 
I am pretty sure that Montana has no minimum for maximum caliber requirements for deer or elk. In fact, even crossbows are allowed to be used in rifle season (for elk!). I know of a farmer rancher who is allowed to execute deer who would otherwise eat feed intended for his livestock. He uses a 50bmg. I have fond Montana memories of my grandfather taking whitetail at close range using a 22lr hollowpoint.

On the other hand, wasting meat or causing unnecessary suffering to a game animal is a crime in Montana.
 
I was just reading my hunting regs and was trying to figure out something that they did that is illegal. I came up blank....

No caliber restrictions, there is a law against waste of game but that is in reference to not taking the entire animal such as just the antlers or back straps.

It pisses me off to no end, but I don't think they broke any laws :(
 
Ive personally heard of people I know taking deer with a .22 lr but at extreme close range. That doesn't make it any more legal but this guy needs to grow a brain someone from his area should inform some of the local law.
 
There is a big difference in the penatration of a 17gr 17hmr Hp and a 40gr 22LR the 22 will penatrate much further while most 17 HMR rounds which are usualy designed to expand rapidly, and hence can just pop when striking bone like a skull. Not that I think a 22LR or any 22 cal makes a decent deer rifle but a sure shot better then the 17 IMHO.

And there is an even bigger difference between .17HMR and .223.
