If you don't the provability that one day you wall is very high, my vision started to give me problems in my mid 40's. Our dependence on our extra eyes varies from I just need them to read to wall what wall.....

So how many of you practice with your gun at the range sans glasses other than safety?

My vision will let me ID and get a nice 3 dot on the front sight, but since my 20's I have practiced the hip shot, thanks to tin cans and cow pies anyplace I look I can reliably plant a round within my 30' go no go zone.
How about the rest of you?

I will NOT fire without my glasses on unless they are already engaging me. I may point, and tell them to stop until I can get my glasses on (think middle of the night scenario) but I can not see faces without my glasses, and I would have no idea who I'm shooting.

I sometimes sleep in an older pair or glasses, so I don't mess up my everyday ones, just in case a middle of the night situation occurs, but I don't always do this.

you're welcome to practice how you like, but it really isn't something you need to do to be able to hit your target without being able to see them clearly...if you practice with your sights enough.

sighted practice gives you the ability to shoot without having a clear sight picture due to the learned muscle memory and body positioning...if you spending your time looking to line up a set of 3 dot sights, you're already behind the curve.

shooting from the "hip" is a completely different skill set than shooting without glasses...it is true pointshooting. it's utility beyond very close ranges is highly debated. i once met possibly the finest point shooter in the world...he did it with the Colt SAA...and even he brought his gun up when shooting seriously. it was just more reliable to score hits

It would be extraordinarily irresponsible of me use any firearm without my glasses. I just can't see well enough to hit anything beyond a few feet, let alone verify the target.

I practice with what I have, and for me that's contact lenses or, on opccasion, glasses. I am never out of the house, and seldom inside the house, without them. It wouldn't make sense to practice shooting without them, as a result. In this case, you have to go home with the one you brought to the dance.

I probably *could* shoot decently without my glasses, as I have once or twice, but usually when I'm awake, they're on my face.

My vision has been 20/200+ (nearsighted & astigmatism) since I was in elementary school.

I authored and published an article in Law & Order magazine years ago about training and equipping police officers who must wear corrective lenses, and I was subsequently contacted by the FBI Medical Director, FBI Academy Officer Survival training unit, California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, and Oregon State Police for additional advice as a result of my article.

If you keep/carry a gun for protection and you have subnormal vision which requires you to wear corrective lenses then it's a good idea to do some training without your corrective lenses. One poster already alluded to being awakened late at night and not having time to put on eyeglasses. Another scenario is having them dislodged (eyeglasses/contact lenses) during a physical struggle. Other possible scenarios include occluded lenses caused by rain or fogging of the lenses when going from a cold environment to one that's warm and humid (entering a building after being out in cold weather or exiting an air conditioned building/vehicle on a hot, humid day).

When I was on patrol I wore prescription safety glasses with a retainer strap and carried a pair of Criss MAG-1 Combat Spectacles in my breast pocket as spares and in case I needed to wear a gas mask..
