Was entitled: Forced to be [strike]a Sheeple[/strike]

Tomorrow I will be doing my civic duty, and in doing so will be forced to put my security into the hands of others. Yes, I have been called for JURY DUTY!!!:cuss:
I will be weaponless from the time I leave my vehicle till the time I return to it. No firearm, not even my small folder in my pocket!!!:fire:
I shall raise my awarness to High Red, as the jury room in in deepest, darkest Downtown Houston. Who knows what wild critters inhabit this place. Haven't been there in years, never had, or felt a need to!:banghead:

Wish me Luck.

Two things.

You can voir dire that "his or her honor" will be armed behind the bench.

And, should you get a case involving self defense with a fire arm, then as Gen. Patton said, "you will know what to do!"

Try not to hit a cop. :D

Will you be wearing a belt with a buckle? Carrying a magazine (paper kind that can be rolled up) or newspaper? Have a ballpoint pen in your pocket?

You might not have a knife or a firearm, but you are far from being sans weapons.

Many are called, but few are chosen.

I suspect that whenever I am called again, if it is gun related, i will be eliminated from the jury pool for fear of an educated bias by either the defense or prosecution.

The last time I was called, the jury was selected before I was questioned. I had though, decided my answer to one of the questions asked of each prospect: "In the case of a guilty verdict, do you have a problem with the awarding of substantial damages?"

I was prepared to respond that I was very uncomfortable with the ambiguity and possible meaning of "substantial."

just remember what the concept of jury nullification is...

last time i was called up, i was really in a bad mood and didnt want to deal with it that day...

so the first question they asked me was "do you feel that you can make a fair judgment about a persons innocence or guilt based on factual presentations?"

my reply was "sure can, they are all guilty right? i mean thats why they are here isnt it?"

i was dismissed about 10 minutes later

Being disarmed is not the same as being sheeple.
Agreed, I think that is overstating it a little. :) Still, after two and a half years of gun carrying - in which, as pax would put it, I've made carrying my default position - I do feel a sort of sense of helplessness if I go without it.

True, but that is only inside the courthouse. Having to leave one's vehicle in the parking lot with weapon(s) in it gives me pause. Are you allowed to check them into a locker or something?

I will be carrying a pen and mech. pencil, my walking cane (wood, made from a nice piece of mesquite) a book to read and a copy of the Houston Comical. I won't be TOTALY disarmed. I will lack the best tools for the job, though.

But don't bring it up if you have any desire to sit on the jury.

Personally I never understood people that intentionally tried to get removed from being seated for a jury. It's a very important role in the system and if I were ever in trouble I would not want people that were just not smart enough to get out of it. I would want people that actually believed in the system.

Here in Texas, just recently, a jury would not indict a man that shot and killed a man that was NOT raping his wife. The wife was crying wolf. The wife was convicted for 5 years for involuntary manslaughter. Now THAT is what jury's are for. No tellin' what a judge would have handed out to the guy.

Shame on you, simon.

What are you and I going to do if they ever figure out pens and pencils make stabbing tools and canes fairly decent clubs. Also that heavy brass buck on my belt works too.

neviander:

good thing there was a competent jury.

In my post above i stated a way that i thought would work to get out of jury duty but I do think that is a civil responsibility. FYI: i have never been called for jury duty and dont plan to evade it if i do.

The last time I was called was 3 years ago. I was working in Pascagoola MS at the time. My loving wife called the Judge and asked if I really had to make a 1000 mile round trip to attend.

He said no. And removed me from the list!

I really want to go, as I do concider this to be an important part, no, more of the bedrock, of the justice system in our country.

I really don't like seeing the term "sheeple" used here on this board.

Remember our mission . . .

I'm not entirely sure this thread fits in Legal, but I'll leave it to the Mods that work this subforum to make that call.

I've been called three or so times. One of them was when I had a vacation scheduled and they moved it back a few weeks. It's embarrassing to see the shirkers talking about trying to get out of it or screw it up if they have to serve. I wonder if they also complain about the stupid decisions juries make now and then.

Wow, if you ever end up going to trial someday, you had better keep your fingers crossed that you don't get the jury that karma wants to give you.

I have been on jury duty twice for 4 months. I am currently on until the end of May.
I consider it an important duty. I fail to see how anyone can complain about the system and then try hard to not be selected.
If you do not consider it important enough to spend your time doing jury duty, then don't complain about the system. You are part of the problem in my view.

Jerry

since when did going to jury duty mean they remove your brain?

that has been and always be the best tool you have.

In Washington State the court is required to provide you with locker space and a receipt for your gun. It is legal to bring it into the lobby to the check-point...so you don't have to walk to and from the courthouse unarmed. I would suggest you check your state laws or call the court to see if there is a similar arrangement in place. If the neighborhood around your courthouse is anything like ours - locking it in the car is not the ideal solution.

During Jury Selection or whatever simply tell them that you cannot, in good conscience, sit on a Jury because you have been disarmed and being in that situation and place makes you feel dirty and treated like a criminal.

Let us know how it goes.
