Over the years, I've read the usual "Best revolver for a Bear" thread...:)

Well, I have live trapped bears for relocation. Dealt with habituated bears. Had to get bears out of cars that had groceries in them and the folks left the sunroofs open. Had one of my guys get into a tiff over a grease trap in a outdoor BBQ....~ at least that one was kinda hilarious....

And whoever invented the plastic tops for dumpsters in remote areas? I swear that one bear was a exhibitionist that waited to see if anyone was watching as he jumped up and down on them to cave them in:)

So I usually:rolleyes: at Bear threads....
Cuz most people should be told to be aware of the fact that they are in the Bears environment, not the shopping mall. Be aware of the environment you are in....

Let's say,,,,
If you are thinking of pitching your tent in the middle of a ripe blueberry field in Summer, and there is steaming scat all about ~ then just maybe, you should rethink your plan:eek:

Now, being a Maine boy ~ I'm more concerned with all the Fishers around my neck of the woods then bears....Friend of mine trapped one this year that was scarry big...... Know there's a animal that scares me....

Funny.

Hey There:
While I do not live in bear country, I would have to agree with what you said.
Lots of talk out there.
My bigger concerns are coming in from my tree stand at night and being confronted by large coon that don't always like it that I;m there.

More then once I have had to go to war with one at just about dark. Usually with out a gun , only my bow.

The last time was it . I now carry even when bow hunting. I have had coon come up the tree that I was in and there wasn't much I could do about it.

I now carry my pocket sized .22 auto and have stopped several of these little brats.
It's a bad bow hunting day when ya have to fight from a tree stand.
Ya, I could just run an arrow thru , but the last time I did, the coon carried on , and on, and on. My day in the woods was shot.

i know what you are saying, lots of people dont realize what is actueally out in the woods, bears might be a concern, and i would be too,but just seen a post about fisher cats and the guy was crying about something like 8 of his cats getting eaten by them, lol, what about wolverienes's?i defently wouldent want to stumble across one of those suckers

I don't know Fischer cats! But around here Bobcats, coyote, and an occasional bear are heard in the evening, seen at first light, and are brave enough to scare the heck out of my horses and the neighbor's dog.
I carry a Taurus Judge, with a couple 410's and balance of 45 colts to protect the place. Due to houses close by, I am forced to mainly use the 410's, (field of fire is not good for hard bullets except for a few directions)
I am not in the back woods, and people in these homes close by think they are cute!! "I had one lady say that to me about the coyote's"

Gizamo: I give up, what's a fisher cat? Just a southern boy who discovered heaven, thanks to the Navy. We have some pretty big cats out here, but they prefer mountain sheep, mule deer, and early morning joggers.

Good to see you here, Giz. Are Fisher cats a problem there? You're the first I've heard, if so. You won't see them in Virginia.

fishers

Fishers are a lot bigger than a pine marten. Although a fisher is in the weasel family, it is MUCH more like a small wolverine! Pine martens a like weasels with a cat like face. Fishers are a NASTY bigger animal.

Attacks on humans by Fishers is basically unheard of, unless one is rabid. They're smaller than coyotes and they're solitary.

Attacks by wolverines are very uncommon. They might try and hunt a kid but that would be rare as hell...much more unlikely than a cougar doing so, and that's rare enough.

I avoid hard liquor therefor I have no concerns for bears, pumas, wolverines, inter alia. And since I am not a occupying communist soldier I am not worried about "WOLVERINES!"

The Bear Gun threads are people seeking to justify their desire to carry a pistol. With a civil right, no justification is needed.

If you are worried about animals, then the same strategy for bars at 3AM should be practiced, avoidance.

A fisher cat? Picture a huge weasel with a bad attitude, on steroids, that loves to run around in trees and you've got it. While fisher cats do indeed eat house cats, squirrels, porcupines, small deer and pretty much anything else they feel like, most house cats are killed by great horned owls.

Woodsmen love the things as they keep the porcupines in check saving lots of trees. In New Hampshire, they're trapped, not hunted.

I doubt you will have to "mess with one" unless it's trapped. They are small wolverines essentially. But a 357 should work just fine or a 22 to the head if they're in a trap.

MAN! I'm gonna have bad dreams now. You know, the ones where you are trying to pull the trigger, but you can't pull hard enough?

The coyotes are getting kitties around here. Apparently they are preferred to other prey.

That owls, fisher cats and coyotes all enjoy a fat tabby makes me think that cats are analogous to rats. An important food source for wild carnivores.

Of course I do see the appeal as kitty does chicken fry very nicely.

I'll agree, Fishers are tough little guys, Wolverines are like in laws, best avoided, but to me the worst (I have ever encountered) was a pissed off Badger in upper WI. I don't have a clue what he/she was mad about but it decided that I was the cause of it's issue.

Being the MANLY-MAN that I am, I squealed like a little girl and jumped up in the bed of the pick up. I'm originally from GA but now live in NC, this is in WI, how the hell am I supposed to know that a Badger can jump????? He/she jumped up on the tailgate so I jumped down to the ground, so did it. Now I ain't scared of nothin' so I get in the cab and slam the door. The little SOB spent the next 20 minutes inviting me back outside (growling kind of) but I was busy. I kept waiting to hear a tire go flat since he then decided that it was the front tire that had caused all of his/her anger.

As suddenly as he showed up, he was gone...... and so was I after I gathered the stuff from the bed of the truck.......

Wolverines are born angry. Not even the big brownies mess with them. But I've never come across one in the wild. They're not easy to find up here. The bruins, OTOH:

Are the people who are "loaded for bear" any worse than the people that fret and frown over which caliber, round and device to use for self defense? Truth be told it is a very small precentage that will ever have to use a firearm to defend against anything. That being said it sure is nice to have it and not need it, than the other way around.

My dad was doing his Masters Thesis up in Itasca State Park (MN) back in the late 60s. I remember him saying that while he was there, the DNR was relocating fishers to the area to help mitigate a porcupine problem.

I saw one running through the snow a few years back while hunting grouse late-season. This was just south of Grand Rapids, MN. It was VERY red (a little darker than Ginger from Gilligan's Island), ran like a mink, and was between fox and yote size. Absolutely beautiful.

"The coyotes are getting kitties around here. Apparently they are preferred to other prey."

True also in Southern California. In fact, I know someone who complained of losing five cats to coyotes living in the canyon behind her house. My response: "Do you have a sixth cat?" She said she was thinking about getting a kitten. My response was, "Yum yum." She did not like my response any more than I liked her thick head.
