Looking like Darrin was killed by a drunk driver. :fire:

Of all the game wardens in the area, he was the most helpful with Hunter Education classes.

Article does not mention that he had wife and kids - the reason, he told me that he went to work for Grapevine PD - just could not support them on what TP&W paid. But, he loved the great outdoors - hunting, fishing and nailing poachers. And the fact that TP&W provided the "toys".

RIP. :(

I saw this story on the news; very sorry to hear about it.

I hope they toss the driver into prison and leave him there. It's just a shame that this sort of thing can't be prevented rather than punished after the fact. Punishment won't bring the husband & father back to the family.

Yep, Art, I suspect they may have known him - or at least known of him.

Back in the late 90s he lived in The Colony, not far from Lake Lewisville and worked it hard during the crazy-out-there boating season. In first hunter ed class he did with me, he gave everyone his home number and said "Call me anytime, day or night, if you suspect poaching and I'll get out there."

Sorry all about the link above. It was good before, but it looks like now that "registration required". Anyhoo, a shorter version from elsewhwere below. Funeral was Monday. Gobs of people. A bank in Grapevine has set up fund for family. A fund that I hope is peanuts compared to what they get from the loser driving the Lincoln. :cuss: But that will never come close to replacing Darrin. :(

EULESS – A North Texas police officer was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver Saturday morning as he conducted a traffic stop, officials said.

Grapevine police officer Darren Medlin was approaching a vehicle he had stopped on Texas Highway 121 in Euless when he was struck by another vehicle, police said. Medlin, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle that hit Medlin was driven by Roy Adams, 27, of Bedford, Euless police said. Adams was arrested on an intoxication manslaughter charge.

Medlin, a drunken driving enforcement officer, had been with the Grapevine Police Department since May 2000. Between 1996 and 2000 he worked as a game warden with the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Medlin is survived by a wife, two children and two stepchildren.

Grapevine police said Medlin's death was the department's first since its 1956 creation.

The incident remained under investigation early Saturday.

From related thread at Glock Talk:

The Grapevine Police Department has set up a memorial fund for Darren's family. Donations may be sent to the Darren Medlin Memorial Fund care of Frost Bank (www.frostbank.com).

Frost Bank's Grapevine address is:

Frost Bank
975 William D. Tate Ave.
Grapevine TX 76051
817-420-5200

A great loss- - -

I had met him a time or two, when he'd drop by the admin wing of the Sheriff's Office. Never really got to know him, but he seemed like a really enthusiastic Game Warden, without being feather legged about it.

I didn't attend the funeral. I've been going to entirely too many funerals lately. :(

Johnny

You know I've never met a game warden in CO or WY that wasn't courteous, friendly and helpful.

Sorry to hear about your friend.
