White House tight-lipped over Kennedy book flap
Wed Sep 17, 1:44 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House is keeping at arm's length a controversial new book alleging that former president Lyndon Johnson had a hand in the 1963 slaying of his predecessor, John F. Kennedy.

The twist: "Blood, Money and Power: How L.B.J. Killed J.F.K." is by Barr McClellan, White House spokesman Scott McClellan's father.

The younger McClellan recently brushed aside efforts to get him to comment on the text, drily telling a reporter: "Thank you for the opportunity, but I'm not going to have any comment on it."

Scott McClellan, 35, is not the only big player in US politics: His brother Mark, 40, heads the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites); and his mother, Carole Keeton Strayhorn, 63, is comptroller in Texas, US President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s home state.

Barr McClellan, divorced from Strayhorn years ago, appears set to make a splash when his book hits stores on September 30.

In it, he reportedly alleges that Johnson's personal lawyer organized Kennedy's killing in Dallas after the young president planned to pick a different running mate in the 1964 elections.

When I was in Nam back in the 60s, my mom sent a book to me titled "LBJ" I cant remember the author after all these years .........but if you can find the book and read it, be prepared for the hair on the back of your neck to stand up..........that book is scary........one part says that EVERY political office that LBJ accended to (except one) was vacated by a death.:uhoh:

I've always thought LBJ was involved. What's the old Detective's rule? Follow the motive, find the killer?

I don't think he set it up, but I bet he knew about it. Probably knew all about it after the fact.

*takes off tin foil hat, turns off X-Files*

eh? what? Pizza and beer? Where?

I grant that I've told a fair number of cynical jokes about LBJ, but I just really do doubt he had anything to do with the assassination. I'm not at all claiming that my folks were close to the Johnsons, but they knew them well enough that I'd have heard some suspicions. I'm talking about my father and my uncle knowing Lyndon and Sam Houston Johnson back in the 1930s and partying with them and suchlike. Or my mother being in and out of the office when LBJ was still a Senator, and meeting him several times. You can get a feel for a person's character and style...

"Lyndon missed the 1963 deer season on account of Mrs. Oswald wouldn't give back his rifle." That sort of nonsense made the rounds...

Now, if you want a harsh look, try J. Evetts Haley's "A Texan Looks At Lyndon". The majority of the alleged facts are indeed true, SFAIK. One can differ as to causal relationships, or as to conclusions from the facts, of course.

It could be possible.

I was sitting in the alert shack at Bergstrom AFB just a little south east of Austin, TX, waiting for JFK to visit us the day he died. The very first thing I heard from other crew members cast suspicions on LBJ. I also had my suspicions.

A little later, a book titled A Texan Looks At Lyndon came out. It was written by an ex- candidate for Gov of Texas. I have that book in my possession but I can't find it at the moment. I'll be searching for sure come morning. Anyway, that book said that LBJ's power base was in Alice, Texas. It also said that Lee Harvey Oswald spent 30 days in Alice, TX just before the action in Dallas.

The book was well foot-noted. I never checked any of the sources referred to in fn's.

I shook hands with LBJ in the summer of '65. Forgive me please.

Having been stationed at BAFB during the first part of LBJ's reign, I heard some fantastic tales of his dealings including one that never hit the press about causing a tanker load of jet fuel to go polluting down the Pedernales River. This involved the use of military personnel as a valet service for LBJ and his crowd. This was totally illegal, but they did it anyway.

When I was at BAFB I was merely a raven. Now I have become a raving raven.

A fella named George Parr was the political kingpin in Duval County (Alice) in south Texas. ("The Duke of Duval") The courthouse in Alice was the setting for the famous burning ballots (to destroy them before a recount) in the 87-vote victory in the 1952 Senate race that made "Landslide Lyndon" a household word. Parr's folks had cemeteries voting in alphabetical order.

However, there was a comment, "Aw, Stevenson's folks were doing the same thing we were (voting cemeteries); they just got scared and quit first."

The probable event that resulted in the fuel spill resulted from a command that a USAF plane fly from Bergstrom to the LBJ Ranch to deliver something. Winter; severe storm with freezing precipitation; crash. (Haley mentions this, but it's arguable as to who actually gave the order for the delivery.)

Haley was an historian. I disremember if he taught at Texas Tech at Lubbock, but that's sort of a memory of him.

The story goes that Lyndon wanted to buy a lot in a new subdivision being developed on the side of Mount Bonnell, overlooking Austin, for his mausoleum. He balked at the $30,000 price tag. The developer asked him why he objected to paying the market price, and Lyndon replied, "That's a helluva lot of money, for just three days."

Duh

"Some men want power so they can strut around to hail to the chief, I wanted power so I could use it." -LBJ

Heard that quote years ago, from a liberal professor no less. Ever since then I suspected his hand in the matter.

A better review of the matter was layed out on I think the discovery channel a while ago. Made REAL good sense of a WHOLE lot.

Conclusion: Communists did it.

1. Didn't like'em cause he was a fierce anti-communist.
2. Oswald had recently visited Cuba
3. Explains why FBI got real tight lipped when the local PD's couldn't keep their mouth shut
4. Explains why records were sealed for decades: public would cry for nuclear war, can't have that.

This leads to another conclusion....
Johnson worked for the Communists. Would this explain his "Great Society"? Me thinks so.

But back to the tinfoil beanie...

The books on LBJ will be prominently on Hillary's desk if she's elected Gen Clark's vice president. Along with the famous photo of LBJ being sworn in on Air Force One.

As Clark's veep, she'll be hungry, and impatient. Sharpening the nails and teeth. Pacing her cage.

Watch yer back, General.

Ok, putting the tinfoil hat away ... :)

Regards.

Whatever the truth of the JFK assassination, LBJ was among the crookedest guys ever to sit on the throne here, imho. He had a charm about him that disarmed people, a lot like His Billness, but underneath he was ruthless as a woman scorned.

So many theories its mind boggling...

My favorite is the Federal Reserve angle...

Or there's always the conglomerated musings of maddening crowd to wade through...
www.coverups.com/jfk/visitors2.htm

The Texan angle makes as much sense as any...

Still and all, pretty good shooting for a "marksman" with a "Fine" carcano instrument of death from afar...

Only 36 more years till the box can be opened to see what (if anything) lies within (pun intended)

Adios

I wouldn't be surprised - LBJ was the orginal Clinton - putting self-interest above all else - shame that he was from TX.

I find it amusing that anyone believes LBJ or any other US government agency had a hand in killing JFK. The same government that brought us Pearl Harbor, Korea, Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Watergate, Iran-Contra, Monica-gate and 9/11 managed to pull off the perfect conspiracy which would have required hundreds of people to accomplish, the killing the president of the United States, leaving no substantial evidence or witnesses and managed to maintain absolute security for over 40 years?

Not a chance.

Funny story about the LBJ/Kennedy thing. Back in 1990 a friend of mine worked in a paper company and a huge shipment of books came in to be destroyed. The books were first editions and in pristine condition. My buddy picked up a couple and took them home to give to family and friends. The book was awesome and I've always questioned why those books were destroyed.

The name of the book is "The Texas Connection" and is the best book on the subject. The author, Craig Zirbel could have used an editor for his writing, but his premise is a fascinating one: Lyndon Johnson was facing the death of his political career, and possibly criminal investigation for two political scandals, so he took the only way out that would solve all his problems. He removed JFK, someone whom he believed stole the 1960 Democratic nomination from him, and made himself president.

LBJ had motive, he had the opportunity, and he was the only one who could truly cover it up.
