At the beginning of the month I attended the Fort Benning 3 Gun Challenge hosted by the Army Marksmanship Unit. This match attracts the best competitors from around the world. The AMU runs a great match, and the thing that makes this match so cool is using military ranges and equipment you will not find in any other competition.

The AMU let us run Trooper Class at this year's match. Trooper Class was created by us at Cavalry Arms, and requires that the shooter can only use what they start the match with and must carry it from stage to stage without assistance. Equipment is completely unlimited, shooters can use whatever guns and accessories they want in Trooper. There was some talk about requiring us to wear armor to make it more challenging, so I brought my own...it ended up not being required, but I wore it the whole time anyway (except for the stages that props precluded it's use). I placed 3rd/7 in Trooper, which isn't bad considering the people I was competing against. The Match Director told me he wants to make Trooper better and more challenging for next year, and I expect more competitors to participate.

The AMU's machine shop/gunsmithing facility was very impressive. One of the AMU's missions is to enhance combat readiness by training other military units in marksmanship, and applying new firearms technology from competition to military applications.

The application of competition shooting technology to military applications is particularly apparent in Sniper Rifles and Designated Marksman Rifles. Many of the modifications to the M14 that turned it into the M21, the Remington 700 that turned into the M24, and the M16A2/A4 that turn it into the Squad Designated Marksman Rifle come directly from competition shooting. One of the reasons the AMU hosts this match is to see new firearms and accessories, and how people are using them.

Stage 1 Involved riding to the MOUT range in a Striker. Once at the stage the competitors were met with simulated machine gun fire and smoke and told to run into the building. The stage was semi-blind, you did not know what it was going to be until your turn to shoot and were given a limited amount of time to prepare.

Other props on the stages included;
A free-swinging bridge we had to shoot from.
A moat with a small boat we had to shoot from while moving.
M2 Bradley we ran out the back of on the start of the stage.
Suppressed M4 Carbine
M24 Sniper Rifle
Simulated tunnel
Parachute harness to get out of at the start of a stage.

I'll be posting a video on youtube later.

Also watch for the Outdoor Channel's Shooting USA program special on the Fort Benning 3 Gun Challenge. I was interviewed for the program, hopefully I didn't look like too much of a dork :p

Yes, we used a 3 Round Burst M4 Carbine supplied by the army on one of the stages. We shot our PKM on one of the stages after the match was over.

do they have a website or schedule of matches? I'd love to go to some
