This post might get moved to that other forum for meeting up, but since it is hunting specific, I decided to post it here.

Any THR folks near the Fort Smith, AR area going dove hunting?

Any such folks have access to a big, nice swath of private dove hunting land who would be interested in a THR type gather, hunt, and dove grilling afternoon on the first day of the season?

I got PM'ed by one THR member near Fort Smith asking about eating dove together, which sounded great.

And then I figured, why not see if we can't cyber-organize a THR dove hunt for the River Valley area.

Heck, I'd probably be willing to travel up to 50 miles to do this.

I've got no access to private land....just a very crowded public field near Mulberry, AR.

Any ideas?

Post them here, or email me at [email protected]

So far, nuthin.......

If nothing continues to develop, here is my plan.

I will be in the Game and Fish Commission public dove field near Mulberry, with about 100 other folks, on opening morning of dove season.

It's crowded, and noisy, and you have get there at about 4:30 am if you want a decent spot.....but it sure beats not hunting.

I would be interested as well, and I have access to a limited amount of private land. The only problem is, I've never dove hunted before. I wouldn't even know if there are any dove on this land, besides, I don't think they'd be fond of me bringing anyone else onto their land. If it were my own land, I'd be all over this. If we do come up with something else though, I might be in.

Newt, I understand about not wanting to bring a horde of strangers to someone else's land.

As for seeing if your land has dove or not, here are some things to look for.

Is the land open fields? Is it planted with or near any fields containing food plants that dove like? (wheat, millet, etc).

Is there a pond, lake or other water source on the land?

Can you get to the land just before sunrise or just before sunset and can you see any mourning dove rocketing around?

If a feller could sneak in the back of Ft Chaffee....oops...did I type that? :D psst- they have deer too.

I don't know anyone up that way with land anymore. I've become so isolated since I changed stuff to attend college; what friends I had have move away; and well - nobody likes it when you attend school and don't go play like you used to.

I haven't even re-newed my combo license yet this year. I was not even planing on going <gasp> That is something I used to never do - miss the opener. I have hit the opener in OK, TX, and of Course AR. Been known to hit the opener in two states in one day. Nobody had called and invited me - I haven't called to check with anyone. It is like I was dropped from hunting/ shooting lists. *shrug*.

Is there not still a fella , actually two folks now that I get to thinking....Over the line in Salisaw and Moffit OK. These guys were covered up in birds. IIRC all legal , all ethical ,just paid $10 and per person and took a section of the land for your party.

OH phooey....the gun store on Midland and the one out toward Chaffee used to know how to get in contact. Oh - the pawn shop in VAn Buren that had a nice gun selection did too.

Been a few years ( back around '80) surely these folks in Moffit still has spots.

Best can do...HTH
