I don't know about 'collector's item', but mine is an excellent shooter. My only named gun. The SKWERL HAMMER!!

I had to spend oodles of money on aftermarket parts, and lots of trigger refining work to get my 10/22 equally accurate to the stock 581 benchmark.

My very first gun was a 581 bought for me in 1967. It cost $49.95 retail. I learned to shoot with that rifle, and I have mourned its loss ever since it was stolen in 1987.

A few years ago I went into a gun shop and saw another 581. It had belonged to a well-known gunsmith who had died and his widow was selling a number of his personal guns on consignment. This 581 had been subjected to an amazing amount of custom work for an inexpensive .22 rifle. The barrel had been shortened to 20" and free-floated, and the action was glas-bedded. He had also drilled and tapped the action for a second screw securing it to the stock (the 581 has only 1 action screw) and lead weights had been inserted in the fore-end under the barrel to make the weight and balance the same as it was with the original 24" barrel length. I had to buy it.

I don't think there is any collector interest in 581s. They aren't rare. They are real nice little guns, though.

My custom 581

One of the best .22 bolt actions ever made, IMO. I had a lefthanded one and stupidly sold it. Very accurate and had one of the best factory triggers I've ever felt.

I have one that my wife shoots far more than I do.
She loves it.
I don't know if these rifles are collectable but guys try to buy it every time we have it out to the range.

Probably not collectable at all. Its kind of a cheaper alternative to the 541 the way the 788 was a cheaper alternative to the 700.

It should be great shooter. Mine tends to like standard velocity .22 ammo the best.

I got my 581 used when I was 8 years old. 16 years later it is still one of my favorites. I don't think it is a collector's item, but it will appreciate in sentimental value very rapidly. I can't think of a single complaint.

I have one in excellent condition with a New Nikon Prostaff scope on it, and I was thinking of selling it. What would be a fair price for it? Thanks-
