At least one I've never seen before. Was at the range this morning, collecting my brass like usual (along with a few strays), and this ended up in the pile. It has an internal band in the base that is integral to the case.

It measures ~0.351" from the mouth, and mouth to base (along the edge) is ~0.534".

Is this something new? Or am I the last one in the know?
I apologize if this is a repost.

You're the last one to know.:)

They've been around for a few years, with a couple of different headstamps, but the IMT seems to be the most common right now. You'll also find them on some AmmoLoad headstamped brass.

Hope this helps.

I have some of those mixed in with my 9mm brass. I cant seat some of my bullets deep enough with them and i have concerns about the decreased case capacity causing pressure issues so i discard them to the scrap pile.

One more reason not to load mixed head stamps, and to inspect your brass. The times they are changin.

Specially made for unsupported chambers?

More likely to prevent bullet setback issues. If all their rounds are loaded with the same bullet, and the base of the bullet rests on the ledge, then bullet setback is no longer an issue, especially when the same round is chambered numerous times as in loading and unloading.

As for pressures, maximum loads would have issues, but moderate loads probably wouldn't. There are some threads here on this issue, and some tests were run by one of the posters. If I remember correctly, he didn't have any big issues with pressure or velocity jumps with the stepped brass.

I've been collecting these cases for swaging into bullets. I've been looking for a stronger jacket for high velocity loads and these may solve the problem of bullets breaking up when driven to 1,600+ fps.........

Hope this helps.

The most common in my area are headstamped "FM" from Freedom Munitions

I know people who like to use them (IMT) for loading 9mm Major

Bad stuff. I had to start checking all of my 9mm cases, and those all get scrapped.

They tend to fail at the ridge, leaving a ring of brass at the end of your chamber. It tends to jam things up in a semi-auto. It's even more exciting in an open-bolt full-auto.

It's a personal thing with me too... I don't like them. Like GarretJ, when I run into those they get scrapped. I don't like 2-piece cases or whatever they are. I guess I'm a traditionalist... I don't even load the .45ACP cases with the small primers.

Fred - thanks for the info.

I don't know about mixed headstamps (in 9mm), unless you are referring to the inferior varieties that are only good for recycling. Having shot plenty of Berdan primed brass ammo over the years, and along with so many others around here, means checking cases goes with not wanting to break decapping pins all the time. I learned early on that if I ever forgot to check the brass carefully, it didn't take long for a reminder to show up. Not to mention how often a case is case gets stuck within a case. But you are right that times are changing. They often do. I really appreciate being able to come on here to ask a question and quickly getting useful information and opinions. If nothing else, its food for thought.
