Went to a unit at a local WMA I've never hunted before. The reason I never wanted to hunt it is the potholes are a LONG and ROUGH walk. I tripped over cow tracks and salt grass half dozen times and drowned my Mossberg a couple of times. That's why I hunt with a camo/plastic Mossberg and not a blued steel and and checkered walnut Auto 5 or something. When I got it home, I had to clean the mud off before i could oil it. Stripped the action down and did the inards up with Corrosion X.

So, anyway, a friend and I duck hunted one of the pot holes out there and did pretty good considering the set up was compromised by lack of cover. There were several groups out there using palm leaves as blind material. The place had an unusual number of people because the best unit out there was closed due to river flooding, why I was there.

But, what I found was that there are several big goose roosts out there. And, when they come up in the morning, unlike most marsh hunting I've done, they don't all fly off to feed in the rice fields. They circle around and land and feed out there. Was a low ceiling and I managed to pop one with 3 steel from 2 3/4" at near 40 yards. He folded, then about half way down he stuck his wings out and glided to a crash landing 400 yards away. :cuss::banghead: As I sated, the walking SUX out there. I'm going to be sore tomorrow, I know that, and frankly I'm pretty sore now, but I'll get over it.

What I'm thinkin', though, is I can walk about half way out to the first water (easier walking first half of it) and set up in the fields with my 200 Texas rag windsock deeks. This morning, I'd have KILLED 'em! Good low ceiling about 50 yards, perfect. The duck hunting is good out there, I think, because no one is willing to walk that far through salt grass and mud to do it. LOL There were lots of pintail groups out there, but I couldn't get any of 'em to work, my only misfortune. The goose hunting has potential, though. I NEVER see that many hunters down there, were there, as I say, because the other unit was closed. And, out of the bunch, NONE of 'em was hunting geese, all duck hunters.

Anyway, time to order some steel shot and wads for my 10 gauge reloader....
