Found one!

I FINALLY got to handle a S&W Shield this am at my LGS. This one was in .40 caliber.

I like the little sucker. Not in the market for one as I just bought a XDs in .45. Had I not, I would give it CLOSE consideration.

I liked everything about it EXCEPT the thumb safety is SMALL. I'm afraid it could easily be missed in a 'hurry up' situation. I GUESS you would be ok to carry it in a holster that covered the entire trigger and leave the safety off.

Although the .40 might be peppy in it, I'd have to assume it would be ok as the XDs in .45 is quite ok-much to my surprise.

I certainly couldn't fault anyone who decides on the Shield for their use.

If you are going to holster it, definitely, there is no reason at all to turn on the safety.

I figure the safety is for people pocket carrying, but with how small it is, recessed in the frame, just leaving it unchambered and racking it after the "draw" would be faster, in my opinion.

I've found the safety on the Shield to be very easy to use, even as small as it is. The safety is very positive both on and off. Shooting 1911's for many years, I find it quite natural to use the safety and flicking it off with the thumb is not a problem. I wouldn't worry either way. Just carry in a good holster that covers the trigger.

Exactly, I never turn my Shield's safety on. I just pretend its not there.
