i recently got my first flintlock, and i could not find any real black powder. all i had was some Triple Seven, however i got the idea to mix sulfur in with the powder substitute to lower the ignition temperature! i found that T73F mixed with a pinch of sulfur will ignite pretty reliably in a flintlock! how neat! i will be using some of my "sulfurized" priming powder down by the touch hole, and a small charge of Jim Shockey's FFG powder sub under a Minnie ball i cast. i will also test out some round balls. I'll let you guys know how this turns out! by the way i recently received a Traditions Frontier .50 caliber flintlock rifle kit, i finished it yesterday! i must say this is a great rifle and could become my favorite piece, but i haven't even shot it yet! i guess this weekend i will find out if she shoots as good as she looks! i will be taking my dad (who i recently got hooked on blackpowder) maybe my mom if she has the time, and maybe even my lady friend! i have never fired a flintlock (only a caplock) so this will be very interesting!

Adding sulfur is a great idea.
I hope that it works well enough so that none of the PRB's get stuck in the barrel.
Please make sure that anyone firing it wears eye protection that provides full coverage for their eyes. :)

of course! i make sure to wear eye protection when i shoot, it is common sense! i might also test some shot loads too! i twisted up about 40 paper cartridges with balls in them, and about 20 with Minnie balls in them! reloads should be quick and easy! i will also try and film it, as well as a shooting video of my blackpowder .22 revolvers! it will be great!

That's a pretty neat idea.
I don't think articap was being accusatory or condescending with his advice. The part of the brain that assesses risk doesn't develop until about age 25, which means that you don't outgrow your stupidity until then. I didn't outgrow mine until about age 30. When we're young, we tend to think we're 10 feet tall and bulletproof. People especially tend to neglect eye protection until they get an eye injury. Even with safety glasses, I've gotten things in my eyes. Goggles are nice, but not practical or possible for a lot of activities.

Even better. You have 2 local sources for real black. Once you go black, you never go back. I much prefer real black to fake black. For me, real black is easier to clean than the subs. Plus, ignition is more reliable, since it takes nearly twice as hot a spark to ignite Pyrodex as it does to ignite schwartzpulver.

You could always make your own black. Or maybe even make some 60% saltpeter/40% sugar powder.

Congratulations on the build young man !!!

I can hardly wait to see the videos, with you showing off your little collection you have going...

Now remember, when you do the video, fake the recoil on your shoulder, make it look like your taking the recoil from a howitzer !!! LOL (Ya know, the movies always exaggerate EVERYTHING !!!)

Best of luck with the powder mix !!!

Sincerely,
