A while back I posted I was having a problem with my 1911 feeding ammo and got alot of feedback on what it could be. Well the gunsmith just called and told me he had checked out my pistol and found that when the barrel was chambered it was 3 1/1000's to short for factory case lenth. He reamed the chamber and it fires any load he put through it:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D I get it back saturday. He only charged me 30 bucks so I feel it was a cheap fix. After he got it done and was shooting it he said it is one accurate pistol. I can't wait to get it back. O well I told everyone I would post what he found wrong with it. thanks guys for your input.

Maybe whatever manufacturer made your pistol should come up with the thirty bucks. :uhoh:

It's great when you can put out crap and the customer will pay for the repairs... :banghead:

I agree

Undersize chambers in 1911s is a plague. In my opinion...
The high end gun makers and aftermarket barrel vendors cut them undersize so they can get a quarter inch smaller group out of a Ransom Rest and advertise "minimum match chamber."
The mass producers try to get just one more plant shift's production out of a worn reamer and cut that last batch undersize.

However, .003" in chamber length is not enough to affect operation of the gun. It was probably undersized in diameter, too, or cut with a taper.

Prisoners have to be fed...

Anyway I have no idea who made this particular gun and/or barrel. But Jim Watson hit the nail on the head. Any fighting gun should not be tight chambered, with the possible exception of a sniper's rifle. The proper place for tight chambers (and for that matter, tight pistols) is on the target range.

More so, there is a big difference between a chamber that's made correctly, and one that isn't because the reamer is too small from wear.

Any manufacturer can turn out a lemon once and a while, but some seem to do it wholesale.

And in either case when it happens, THEY SHOULD BE THE ONE WHO PAYS TO FIX IT! :fire: :cuss: :banghead:

xaviarbreath you hit the nail on the head as yes it was a storm lake NM barrel. My barrel was totally shot out and I bought it and had it fitted by a highly recommended guy in this area with 1911's what I did not know was when he fitted it he used reloaded semi wad cutter ammo to test as this is what he uses in match shooting. It shot fine for him but when you used factory hard ball, hollow points ect. it was just a bit off.

Call Storm Lake and tell them what happened. They are a great company with excellent customer service. Hell, they gave me a free 6" 10MM Glock barrel for free. I gave them plenty of feeback after I purchased a 4.6" barrel from them for the same Glock. When they offered up a 6" barrel for trial I jumped on it.

I had an AMT Skipper like that once, had to whack it with my palm to get it to lock up. I stuck the barrel in a lathe and bored the chamber .005 deeper, never had a problem again. I wish I still had that gun.:(
