Hi all,

I've been looking for a Marlin 336 in 30/30, and I stumbled across an old one that has a saddle ring. Forgive my ignorance, since I am still a newbie... but I thought only Winnies cam with saddle rings.

Anyway, I like the stock on this Marlin (old but not too shabby) and it looks a hell of a lot better than the newer ones that were sitting on the shelf. I am curious though as to the purpose of the small squarish piece that is located above the saddle ring. It looks like its meant for something to slide into it.... can anyone offer me some insight as to it's purpose?

Think its a good bargain for $279?

Again, I apologize for my ignorance and I thank you all in advance for your help!

yep

that's a mount for a Williams aperture sight. You can remove it and fill the holes with plug screws. These came drilled and tapped for this type of mount from the factory.

May be drilled and tapped for the scope mounts though - newer ones come with these but the older ones did not - that detracts from the value if done after-market.

The scope probably insn't worth much and may not work right, so don't consider that in the purchase.

All said, if the bore is strong and brite and action locks up tight, then $279 is a decent price.

Looks like this one might have been a special issue - judging by the gold plated saddle ring.

I used their bore light to take a look..... it was a bit dusty and I could not see much..... any particular signs I should be looking for? If I buy it, I will remove the scope...... I thinks its sacriligious to have a scope on a lever. :)

If you don't want the scope ask them to take it off.

Lets you see if anything under it is messed up and you may be able to talk them down more if you don't want the scope.

As has been said, the square piece is the base for a Williams receiver sight. At .30-30 distances, you might shoot just as well with one of those. As a result, you might want to ditch the clunky scope (I never did like scopes on levers).

I doubt that the saddle ring came from the factory, but it does make yours stand out from the crowd. Enjoy.

That's a nice old straight grip. If the barrel's not shot out, buy it!

Go to the 336 Club in this forum and ask there, too.:)

There's a good idea. And as to the bore, bring a pull-through with you ask if you can run it through the bore to see what it really looks like. You can make one with some high-test fishing line and with a cleaning patch tied on one end and a small fishing weight on the other - drop it down the bore and pull it through - put a little clp or oil on the cleaning patch and use an oversize patch so that it'll wipe the bore.

Cleaning it isn't a bad idea, but I wouldn't use CLP or oil. Any kind of lubricant will leave a shiny film in the bore that will hide problems. If the bore looks bad, run a solvent patch down it, and then a couple of dry patches. Once it is good and dry, inspect with a bore light.
