I was led to believe that you were supposed to learn marksmanship with similar weapons from the time period.

When everyone in the shot had plinker .22's I was a bit disappointed.

...That said, a buddy of mine brought a tube fed Marlin 60. After realizing there was no way he could shoot riflemen due to the time requirements, he simply settled down and learned to shoot better and didn't worry about speed....
I shot Rifleman with a 60. Time was never a factor - at that shoot I was first shooter done on every stage.
AS lets you load 11 and eject one (instead of mag change).
The part about learning to shoot better is accurate.

gun guy was right exactly dead-on when he said:
I am always leary of some messiah leading an armed band. First, its: For Country, Then God and Country, and we start downhill, And God told me, to tell you....and then we have a replay of the Branch Dividian fiasco, or Jamestown, etc. My advice is, enjoy the shooting sports, but the minute a bible comes out, or they want you to bow your heads, heads for the hills.

I've seen all types of rifles come to the Appleseed line. Last month, someone in Gibsonburg, OH scored Rifleman with an old bolt action .22... and he was shooting left handed! He'd reach up and over to work the bolt with his left (trigger) hand and hit a really solid score.

While a mag-fed, semi-auto like the M1A, AR15, or Ruger 10/22 is ideal, you can learn the fundamentals of marksmanship with anything at an Appleseed so long as it is safe and legal.

PS, oh, and I think it's one of the most culturally unifying projects of the last 100 years. ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE, can participate, learn very worthwhile wholesome skills, learn the TRUE history of country and come to understand that we all actually share a lot more in common than we think.

I think that was very well said.

Who is Appleseed for?

That's strange, because at Ramseur, where we attended, they required the traditional 8 and 2.

I just got the following in an email from Appleseed -

The news is that Monday morning (prob about 8:50 AM EST) on nationwide Fox News channel, an Appleseed spokesperson will be interviewed in front of as many as three million viewers.

There will prob be interspersed video of the recent GA event which Fox attended.

Should be interesting.

I attended an Appleseed in May. I asked the Shoot Boss before about the tube-feed rifle. His response:
Straight from the Instructor's Manual:

"Make sure the shooters with tube fed rifles understand that if the upcoming COF involves a magazine change they are to simulate it by loading 11 rounds, placing two shots in the first target for that stage, eject a round and then continue the COF."

I blogged about my experience, and suggestions for future tube-feed shooters here.

8 and 2

Huh.....I wish my friend had known that. He might have had a fighting chance with his 60. They're a great shooting little gun, but he was frustrated with the "rules" as they were explained to him.

I used a Rem 597 with Tech-Sights and had a better time than he did.

I'm looking forward to seeing the interview tomorrow.....:)

By the way, Usagi, read your blog. I think you may be a tad off-base in your criticisms of Appleseed. Sad to hear that "you no longer condone" Appleseed.
