Up untill this morning, I had thought that the frame for the Commander and the Gov't Model were the same. Now, I dunno...

The Caspian web page lists frames for both. I plced a phone call to Caspian and asked if there was any difference in the frames. The reply was that the rails and dust cover on the Commander was about .100 shorter than that on the Gov't Model.

I don't know if this difference pertains only to Caspian frames or is an industry std.

Is there a different industry std for the two frame sizes?

Thanks,

salty.

The Colt standard for Commander vs Government Model receivers is as Caspian described. The rails are shorter so as to gain back a little of the slide stroke that was given up in reducing the barrel and slide length by 3/4". The dust cover is shorter so as to not overlap the recoil spring tunnel contour on the Commander slide.

There is not an industry standard. Caspian adheres to the Colt practice. Not all makers do, some Commanderoid 4" guns are just shortened G.M.s.

I do know I swapped the slide on my Combat Commander one time with a buddys Govt. model, and there was a DEFINATE gap between the spring guide channel and the frame. I bought my Commander new in 76 for 185.00 and still love it. Wouldn't mind having a Govt. at all, but would not trade if that was the only choice. I've done a little work on it over the years (Was Satin Nickel, had the slide Industrial teflon coated, Pach. grips and mainspring, long trigger, etc.) but nothing drastic. It is throated, and shoots anything you stick in it including 255 gr. H.C. flat nose L.C. bullets.
