I noticed that I can locally buy .300WM mag ammo with Dynamic Research Technologies lead-free 200 gr frangible bullet. They are very expensive.

What's the point? Anyone know?

i'm kinda curious about this myself. the cheapest 308 bullets i can find for reloading are frangible. i'm wondering how well they would work. thinking of using them for 3gun. they're quite light. dunno what kind of velocity i could get though

Taliv,

If the .308 bullets you are talking about are the 108 grain military pulls, I can tell you right now that they suck. They have about the same hardness as lead. I made some light loads for my .308 and I still could not hit anything with them. If you can find the military load for them then maybe they are good, but I have not been able to hit anything at 25 yards with them. You would probably have to load them really light like in the 1800 fps range.

ugh... yeah, the ones from hi-techammo. no wonder they're so cheap and still in stock

1800 fps and 108g probably wouldn't cycle most actions. (I was looking to shoot them in an M1A)

thanks for the warning

1. Great for "lead free" ranges, wildlife preserves where lead is restricted (for example, loons around here and freshwater concerns), EPA restricted areas, etc. but still retains acceptable ballistics for hunting in these areas. You will see more and more of this just like they did with fishing lures and sinkers......guaranteed.
2. Great for HD where over penetration and "next room" concerns are apparent as these rounds are designed for this conern both in civilian defense and police/military training excercises.
3. Very, very effective against exposed soft targets where, again, collateral may be a concern.

These are the most prominent benefits that I'm aware of. We were required to use them at the academy due to lead concerns (very heavy use indoor range).

An indoor range I went to in Vegas used frangible loads in their rental machine guns (Man ... good thing Thompsons are so expensive or I'd have to have one ..). Keep the lead dust and the ricochets down.

I have a magazine full of frangible for my Glock 26. I load with them when I walk my dog as I'm much more likely then to run into a canine threat than a human one. Since I'd likely be shooting down at a shallow angle, in a suburban neighborhood, I load frangible. When I get home it's back to the Federal HST's.

I talked them at the SHOT Show. They had some Gel type substance that they had shot with some of these bullets. They are devastating.

I don't know if they are worth the price but they work. A friend that was in the AMU does some testing and rep work for them has shot deer with good results. He says DRT stands for Dead Right There.

This is not an endorsement. I don't know a thing about hunting or what other bullets are capable of.

Taliv,

The ones I have I got for free from hi-tech ammo. They offered to sell them to me for $25 per 1000. I still have 480 left out of the 500 they sent me. If you want to pay for shipping I can send them to you. I shot them from my m1a with some hot hot loads to try and see if they would cycle but no dice.
