Free ammo today at Walmart!

In Royal Palm Beach, FL Walmart was giving out $10 gift cards to anyone who gave blood via the Blood Bank bus so I thought it would be a good time to teach my 7 year old daughter the benefits of giving blood and at the same time get a gift card for free ammo. Just thought I'd let anyone in West Palm Beach know about this.
 
Can you change the heading of this thread to something more accurate like "even trade for ammunition" or something? I fail to see where there is any free ammo here as something (in this case blood) has to be given up in trade.

Sorry to jump on you but this is one of my pet peeves. People have been so brainwashed by marketing that they don't know what it means to get something for "free" so the term gets misused all the time.

If something was free (say a box of ammo) then I could walk in, pick it up, and walk away with it. But if there is some catch or process I have to deal with first then it is not free even if the cost is very small. In truth I consider my blood pretty valuable.

No doubt your blood is valuable as you do not want to lose too much of it at one time however, I like helping others and among giving countless hours of my time for charitable causes, donating hundreds of dollars every year to those less fortunate than myself, and riding my motorcycle all over the Southeast to Children's hospitals and nursing homes to make an effort to cheer them up or just sit with them and listen or play games...I give my blood. God knows someone at this very second needs it more than I do and I give it as a GIFT to them as I do every 2 or 3 months. A gift that is FREE, no strings attached. For that I got a $10 GIFT card which was FREE, no strings attached.
Semantics is a 2 way street.
BTW, I have been in Sales and Marketing for about a decade but thanks for the lesson on marketing.
 
Okay, fair enough that I'm being snippy... BAD ZeSpectre... BAD!

But in all seriousness, if you are going to teach a lesson, let it be Heinline's classic example of "TANSTAAFL" (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). In other words that -everything- has a cost somewhere and anyone trying to tell you different is running a con of some sort.

that's cool, we all have those days. And in theory you are right that everything has a cost associated with it. So, we will definitely agree on that :) Now go fire off some rounds and get that tension out of ya!
 
ZeSpectre: Not sure I'm with you on your complaint, but I agree that the term "free" gets capitalized entirely too often. Such to the point that not only is it printed all in caps in every piece of advertising literature known to man, but most people have fallen to thinking that it isn't spelled correctly except all in uppercase, and they've started typing it on forums and elsewhere on the internet accordingly.

Anyway, you guys can have your thread back now. Heh.
 
Sheeesh... You could'a gone down to your local plasma service, had 'em suck a pint of blood out, they keep the plasma, you get the red cells back and walk out the door with between $25 and $100+ depending on your blood type. Which will buy a heck of a lot more ammo than a measly $10.
 
This reminds me of those "free" things that merely require 30 min of your time to fill out some questionaire/survey wanting who knows what personal info to take possession of the "free" item. I guess some people consider thier time free too? Maybe thier privacy worth nothing? I however think most people earn an hourly wage and large segments of thier time + private info and jumping through hoops is far from free!

But giving blood is noble and it is great you can get two birds with one stone, or is it three birds with your daughter learning, the blood helping someone and the ammo?

It is still far from free.

You may be grouchy but you're right. A thread that's titled Free! without a qualifier should mean just that - free.

So you're grouchy but I old. At least in the morning you'll have a chance to be un-grouchy but I'll still be old.

I think it's hilarious that no one's mentioned -

How often to you get to take incoming rounds, bleed about a pint, and still be happy about the transaction?
 
Free is free. Something for nothing is free.

Giving something in exchange for something is a trade.

It's not semantics, it is definition.

Giving blood is a giving gesture, but it takes something from your body. It also takes 20-30 minutes of your time. I know what my employer pays me for my time; how much is my free time worth?

If I choose to trade my time/blood for a gift certificate, that's what it is: a trade.

Here it pays $20 the first time, $80 the second. $40 the 3rd, $120 the 4th, then the cycle repeats. They forget to mention you hafta wait in the waiting room for 4-6 hours after they screen you but before they prick you.
$20/6 hours = not worth my time.
$120/12 hours = not worth my time.
$160/18 hours = not worth my time.
$280/24 hours = not worth my time.
I tried giving plasma for income when I was unemployed. I did better spending that same time looking for a job.

Not to mention the place was filthy and has been since torn down. I actually had doubts about the sterility in places like that. They put on a professional front, but were nowhere near as clinical as a blood bank. Maybe, it's just the 2 plasma centers I've seen. But I won't be going back, and I encourage others to go to a blood bank.

Too bad I had TB when I was young. I'm not sure they'd want my blood.
 
I wish our walmart had that!

I need to get rid of my bloods. Too much RBC and WBC counts. If they seriously let me, I would like to donate 5pints for $50 worth of ammos.
