I am conducting and organizing meetups in North Atlanta on the perimeter free of charge (except a nominal $5 fee to cover facility costs).

This Saturday (3/3/12) at 1 pm (expected 2.5-3 hour duration) we are going over Crazy Monkey Defense boxing, which you can see more about here in this short video:

Next Thursday (3/8/12) at 5:30 pm (expected 2-3 hour duration) we will be working on Standing Grappling with Pressure.

You can sign up and/or learn more at our meetup.com site, http://meetup.com/ss-tac.

The training will be held at Crossfit Perimeter on Roswell Road. It's at the corner of Abernathy and Roswell.

Lately Southnarc and his training methods have come up a lot lately. I am not affiliated with him but have taken over 100 hours of training with him, and can definitively say that if you want to get started doing serious H2H and force-on-force type training, this is a great start - and it's nearly free! The stand-up grappling and boxing integrate very well as "delivery systems" and help with the vital skills of mobility and protecting your consciousness. If you attend these meet-ups and take ECQC with Southnarc, you will find that the skills carry over perfectly.

People of all experience- and fitness-levels are welcome! The only thing you need is athletic wear and a good attitude! Mouthguard and athletic protectors optional but recommended.

I am doing this for personal development reasons: having a solid training group is mandatory to get a good base in these skills.

You may also PM or email me with any questions by clicking my username.

I would highly recommend that anyone in the area who can manage to attend, do so. I had a chance to talk to Craig for a while this weekend (were your ears burning, conwict? :D) and though I wasn't able to get to his seminar at Polite Society (I was scheduled to shoot the match at that time) it was really good to see him again.

It's critical to build your skills from contact range out, even more than it is to work on them from 21 feet. When your turn comes at the criminal roulette wheel, things are likely to kick off from four feet or closer, and your ability to handle the interaction that occurs from first seeing a potential assailant until you can tell you have a problem is going to be critical. And if you don't see your assailant coming (even though I know everyone here has 100% perfect situational awareness 100% of the time), your ability to handle the interaction from contact distance is going to be even more critical.

We say it over and over, because it's true - a gun is not a magic talisman that will keep trouble away. Even if you are part of the 1.5% or so of Americans who has a carry permit, and even if you are part of the .1% or so who carries every day, the worst case scenario is that you won't know you have a problem until the problem is within contact range. You will need to open up time and space to deploy your firearm, and having to learn to do that when things are for real is NOT the time you want to first get acquainted with the idea.

If you're in the Atlanta area, this is a great opportunity for you to work on some seriously practical defensive skillsets. My wife and I attended conwict's Wilmington meetup when we could, and both of us found the chance to review what we learned from Craig very useful. If you don't go, you're missing a bet.

Thanks Fred.

This will be an ongoing thing, twice a week. I would love to see some people from THR at the meetup tomorrow. 6:30pm, at the Crossfit Perimeter at the corner of Roswell and Abernathy.
