I thought that might get someones attention. I guess what I am going to say is for those of you who ask people for their free stuff. If your going to ask and then say you will pick up the shipping cost, then do so. When you give someone your word, then just stick to it or don't ask. I am tied of sending brass ( or a few other items) to people who say they will pay the shipping then you never hear from them again. I have heard this from a few others who are in the same boat as me. We are not hurting for the money, but I have earned it just like the rest of you have. Maybe there is just a little too much trust out there. For those of you who this does not pertain to then sorry you had to listen. For those who whom this is addressed, then please take notice and don't take for granted those of us who are trying to help a fellow THR member out. That is just my .02 cents worth and thanks for letting me vent.

When the man is right, the man is right. It is not the money; it is the principle of the matter. Do what you say, and say what you do. JMHO.

it's just the way some folks are.
Stop giving stuff away, ask for money up front.

Hell, I've ordered from individuals before who have asked for money orders only...and I send them a check and tell them "you have my word that there are sufficient funds to cover that check, but I understand if you want to wait until it clears before you ship."

I look at it like this, someone has to be trusted in a long-distance transaction. Either the seller or the buyer, so if you're selling something for a reasonable price, I guess the buyer should trust you to handle the transaction appropriately.

As a note, every time you buy anything, you're making a donation to a retailer. Every time you go to work, they're making a donation for your time when you're goofing off or less than perfectly productive or taking sick leave or a paid vacation.

I don't think most folks are out to get you, they're just more interested in doing what's best for themselves. That said... some folks will never pay you back unless you hound them for months first or even borrow something of theirs and hold it ransom. It's just part of life, they're not out to give you trouble, they're just out to keep their few bucks. Hate them if you like, but I find it best to just 'write it off' and move on. If you're a retailer, just increase your margins to cover this 'shrink' in your inventory.... I know best buy writes off about 5% of all revenue as "shrinkable" inventory that will be shoplifted or broken.

Integrity is just a nine letter word to most people.

After having been burned so many, many, many times, I now prefer to have people prove their veracity by putting the money up front.

Trust but verify. If they want the free stuff so bad, then they can pay the shipping up front.

And anyone reading this who has taken advantage of someone's generosity and kindness - shame on you. You are pathetic.

I am not a retailer. All I am saying is that if your going to tell someone you will pay for the shipping, then step up to the plate and do it. If not, then don't ask. Some of us here actually enjoy helping others out and are not out for the money. If someone tells me they are going to do something, then I trust them until proven otherwise. This is not "just the way some folks are". I think is is a term that most people call liers? It is also not just me. there are others here who feel the same. I am just putting it out in the open.

Last summer, I put up about a dozen items for sale. As the letters arrived with payment, in all but one instance, the purchasers sent me CASH! :scrutiny: While at first I was shocked, I was at the same time appreciative of the fact that there are still some people who understand what we all are saying. :)

A person's word means more than any contract. As my one professor used to say,

You have a life time to persistently show yourself to be honest. But you can show yourself to be a liar but once.

Powerful words indeed.

I hate it when people do that. If you understand the terms of sale to be postal money order only, then send a damn money order, or don't commit to the sale.

I've had that happen twice, both times I tore up the check and sent it back snail mail and sold the items to someone who would keep their word and send a postal money order.

Getting a postal money order makes it easy. When you go to the post office to ship, you can cash the money order on the spot and be done with it.

Otherwise, you get to wait, an indeterminate amount of time for a check to clear, then your checking account number is available to someone that *may not* be as careful about keeping it from public view as you would.

Trying to make what's convenient for you, work for someone else because you're too lazy to go to the post office and get a money order *as put forth in the for sale listing that you responded to* is absolutely lame.

I hate this too. Respect the seller's wishes. Maybe the seller doesn't want to drive all around creation trying to cash a check. Maybe the seller wears a tinfoil hat. It doesn't matter, respect the seller's wishes. In most cases it has nothing to do with trusting bank accounts, it's just a hell of a lot easier to cash a USPS money order at the post office when shipping the package. The money order won't give you any special coverage in terms of mail fraud, contrary to the popular belief, it's just easier. Kudos to BigSlick for responding to a seller who needs to "lurn 2 reed good" when it comes to directions on purchasing an item.

In response to the first post, ask for the money up front. I too believe in karma but especially from someone like you who has an established history of sending out the goods, it shouldn't be an issue for someone to send you a little coin up front for the brass.

+1 for big slick!!
in my neck of the woods the seller sets the terms, & thats ok by me !!
i mite kik about the amount but the seller basiclly sets the ball rolling
when they decide to put an item up for sale!!!!

I always thought that it was understood!

And if two people are trading, each picks up shipping on the item that they are sending out.

I've given away one thing via the net and the guy asked where to send a check for the shipping. It was a small item, so I told him to keep the $$ but to buy donuts for the guys at the office or pay for someone's coffee & bagel next time he was at 7-11.

rc109a, Karma will catch up to those folks.

rc109a,
I'm not easily fooled but things like that have happened to me too. I'm sure most of us have had someone lie to us at one time or another. Don't let a few bad apples make you think all are bad. Hold you head up high and know you did the right thing even when the other person didn't.

I have had so many absolutely wonderful transactions on THR and TFL. It's pretty sad that someone can't front shipping costs for a free item.

Those people give freeloaders a bad name! :)

Anyone want to give away any 308, 45, 9mm, or 223 brass I will gladly pay DOUBLE the shipping charges! :)
