A friend of mine told me via email that he just bought a MP5 for $1200 bucks. He describes it as a "Special Weapons MP5 Semiauto". I thought he might be talking about the HK MP5 (civilian) with the grey stocks, but he said it wasn't that one. He says the one he bought has black stocks.

Any idea what he is talking about? Are there any fake MP5s or low priced lookalikes?

Special Weapons is a manufacturer of several HK like semi autos along with other types of weapons.

There reputation is spotty but I do not speak from experience only from numerous threads.

Do a search on Special Weapons and you should get more specific answers and info.

There are two civilian-legal variants of the MP5- the HK SP89, and a S&W knockoff thereof.

And then the aforementioned Special Weapons stuff, which I don't have any firsthand experience with.

Ffirst of all, clarify to your friend that he did not buy a MP5. If so he'd have spent 10x what he did along with the ATF paperwork/wait. The MP5 is the full-auto HK made kin to the SP89. I agree with the others that he likely bought a SW made copy of the SP89. While cheaper than the original HK model, I 've heard conflicting reports on them. Some ppl love 'em I believe because of the look they have and affordable price. Other's I've heard mention their lacking reliability and overall quality. If your friends works for him, great but I think I could find something else to spend $1500 on.

Ironically, in today's classifieds I noticed a "real" one for sale with several mags for $14000!!!!!!!!! Yes, thousands!!!!:what: Local paper.

Depending on the specifications, who did the conversion, and being local (a big plus), it may be worth it.

Sears alone are asking from $7,500 - $9,000.
Registerd Receivers conversions asking prices go from $8,500 - $20,000.

The HK94 was the HK civvie model of the MP5
The SP89 was the HK civvie model of the MP5K

Neither are currently in production

Special Weapons makes copies of both of these.

As the ancient Romans used to say: "Caveat emptor, baby."

On the upside, 9mm SW's can usually be made relatively functional with a small infusion of HK parts and the attentions of a good 'smith. Have seen great 'smiths nearly suicide from the frustration of trying to get .40/.45/.308 ones running... :uhoh:

I was going to say he over paid at $1200. Looks like the $800 I paid for mine (in 86') was worth it. eh? :)
