I think it's here to stay.....Latest issue of American Rifleman (pg 67), some interesting statistics.

"Earlier this year, the BATFE released U.S. firearm manufacturer production data showing that during 2008, more than 337,000 AR-15 style rifles were made in the U.S. and not exported, accounting for 22% of all U.S. made rifles not exported. The number of AR's made since 1986 will exceed 2.5 million sometime this year. Tens of thousands of other AR-15 style rifles were made between 1963 and 1985.

More companies now make more AR's in more varieties than ever before. The most popular models are 20"-and 16"-barreled rifles for home defense and defensive firearm skill training and competitions, National Match rifles for NRA and Civilian Marksmanship Program High Power competition, deer hunting models in calibers such as 6.5mm Grendel and 6.5mm Rem. SPC, 7.62x51mm NATO models for long-range marksmanship competitions and hunting, match grade rifles in various calibers for varmint hunting and several standard rifles and carbines for general use.

Since the AR can be configured for virtually any application, it's on its way to becoming in the early 21st century what the Mauser 1898 and its bolt action successors were in the early 20th century, namely the standard center-fire rifle platform for all applications."
