I'm going to be replacing the front sight on my 1961 model 94 Winchester. It has a bead sight under a removable hood and a Lyman peep for the rear. I want to replace the front sight with a partridge style, I've seen the Skinner sights, any other recommendations? As it is now the rear sight is bottomed out and they groups are a full 5" above poa, so I assume it could use a bit taller front. Any other suggestions for the front sight that I can replace myself?

Thanks

As a5werkes points out, we need to know the distance you want to sight it in for, and the height of your existing sight (drive it out and measure from bottom of dovetail to center of bead). Then you can compute how much taller the replacement must be. The math is easy but without that info we'd just be guessing.

And an accurate distance between the sights.

I just cheated on the front. Jb weld can be removed without damage in most cases and files easily. I made my front sight taller with JB weld, filed until it was right and measured it.

Now I would probably 3d print a taller one and file it down.

Then I found the front sight that was close to that height.

For the questions I have answers for, it's 5"above poa at 100 yds. As for the taller bead, I considered it, or a fiber optic. I shoot the partridge front sights better in every instance and don't struggle to see them, heck I have an easier time with the front sight on an SKS. I'll have to break out the tape measure and the micrometer tonight to answer the rest.

I replaced the front sight on my '94 .30-30 with a Williams Fire Sight fiber optic. It is an exact fit when removing the original bead, I just needed it so my old eyes could see it better. I love it, but being the same height as the original doesn't change the impact for you of course.

Partridge is a bird to be shot, perhaps with Patridge sights @ 100 yds. Aim for its feet. Screen Shot 2018-03-24 at 5.24.01 PM copy.png Screen Shot 2018-03-24 at 5.33.58 PM copy.png
