I was looking at installing an XS Tritium front sight on my S&W 340PD. They make the Standard Dot (RV-0001N-4), which is the one S&W puts on the stock M&P 340, and they also offer the Big Dot (RV-0001N-3). Any suggestions on which one to pick for my 340PD?

The XS Rep. noted that they recommended that S&W use the Big Dot for the M&P 340 but S&W selected the Standard Dot instead.

I like the M&P 340 and was wondering if the Big Dot is too big? Would it snag on my holster leather, etc?

Thoughts welcome...

Glad you found the site for the sight.

S&W designed the gutter or trough with the express purpose of alignment and phasing with the medium or standard XS night site. I don't know if you have the same trough on yours used with the light pipes. It may not be a snag issue but a calibration issue?? Why do you think you need the BD?

Go BIG! XS sights are for fighting guns. Bigger the better for fighting. You can be very accurate using the top rim of the dot if you so desire. There isn't such a large difference between the regular and big dots that it should cause snagging or much change in POI. I'd ask the XS guys though. I've shot with some and they are very friendly.

The dot is semi-worthless with a regular notch rear sight (XS comes with a wide "V" notch and an illuminated post for a "lollipop" sight picture), so if you just want a tritum front sight, I'll look at trijicon. Or if you just want a glowing (daylight) front sight, go for one of the fiber optic ones as they are much cheaper.

I just mail ordered a Big Dot sight, but haven't installed it yet. It only sticks up a little more than a standard sight does. I held it in place right next to my stock red ramp sight on my J-frame, and it looked great. It supposed to be very accurate out to 15 yards. I say get the Big Dot.

I'd like to install the Big Dot myself. S&W e-mailed me that the roll pin holding the 340PD's sight in was .055. The smallest roll pin punch I can find online is 1/16 or .0625. Where would I find .055?

I just put a Big Dot on my Model 60-9. It had a doomed, solid .055" pin holding the old sight on. I used a .050" cupped tip punch from Brownells to install mine. You will also need a #54 drill bit. DSCN4809_680x534.jpg
Here's a little "how I did it" page: http://gbrannon.bizhat.com/xs.html
