The other day while watching a show on "Machine Gun" Kelley, they showed a picture of a 1911 with a Thompson foregrip and a big compensator attached to it. Was this an early machine pistol? I wonder what kind of cyclic rate it would have? Anybody know anything about this?

Yes, about 700 rounds per minute, and they were mostly homebuilt one-offs. Swartz (Colt engineer) built two that I know of in the 1940s, but that was after Kelly's time.

Hope this helps. If you'd like, I have .pdfs of the blueprints and a simple explanation.

Small Arms Review covered FA 1911s and other machine pistols in an article a couple of years ago. Check the index online if you'd like, www.smallarmsreview.com. There have been other articles on the subject from time to time.

One of the guns mentioned was made for an 1930s gangster by a rogue gunsmith and had a foregrip like the one you saw.

Dan Shea, publisher of SAR, has a MG business called Long Mountain Outfitters. He sold a FA 1911 several years ago. It had been registered as a machine pistol before the 1986 ban on newly-made MGs for civilians ( Passed, in large part, due to Charles Rangel (D) New YorK :cuss: ).

(Truth in posting notice: I have written articles for SAR, but would recommend it even if I hadn't.)
