Does anybody know of a diagram of how a fully automatic AK47 works? Been looking everywhere and found nothing. :banghead:

I dont have one handy, but it basically involves pushing the semiauto disconnector out of the way and having an auto sear and a rivet for it in the receiver to delay the hammer properly. I beleive most of the AK parts kits come with the full auto parts, but you just toss out the auto sear and dont drill the extra hole in the receiver during assembly. The auto sear doesnt count as a machine gun, since it can only be used to convert a machine gun to a machine gun. The extra hole in the receiver is the part that makes it an MG. Unless I misremember. I beleive there was a case of some ?Chinese? AKs that were imported with the extra hole in the receiver (and possibly some of the FA parts) but the ATF allowed them anyway and grandfathered them (not sure if they were classified as title 1 or 2 weapons).

And doing such a modification is illegal without a Form 1, which the ATF will not give you since 1986. Thanks a lot Democrats.

The short answer is just like a semi-auto AK, but with a different sear. The correct answer is there is no such thing as a fully automatic AK, all the select fire ones require an operator to pull the trigger before they'll fire.

But semantics aside, the only difference between a semi-auto and select fire AK is a semi-auto sear releases once every cycle when the trigger is pulled, and an auto sear has a second setting where it will release continiously each cycle if the trigger is held back.

I'm sure you could find a more detailed answer, but the real question is why? If it's for intellectual curiosity then fine, but anything else and you're started down a slippery slope. Semi-auto recievers are unable to take autosears by design, and modifying them to take one is definately illegal. Even having a semi-automatic AK and automatic capable parts can be construed to be intent to make an illegal weapon. It's a grey area that you should be very careful about.

You'll find people very reluctant to talk about this, both because a new poster with a low post count could be an BATFE agent trolling for people who offer advice on how to make an illegal weapon, which isn't going to happen on The High Road, and because talking about "fully automatic" weapons tends to make people who aren't savvy about firearms nervous.

My mistake on the imported AKs. I got 2 stories confused together. Some guys registered some AK sears as MGs during the pre 86 days even though the sears arent MGs (because they require modification of the receiver, as I pointed out). Rather than punish the guys for registering non-MGs as MGs, they said the sears couldnt be removed once they were installed. So basically it became a registered receiver type conversion. Etc.

Dunno about the sear thing above, but the MAK-90s that came in with the third hole were not grandfathered, and the ATF has gone after people that own those guns. If you ever see one, run far away.

now don't go and call me a Democrat for this 'cause i'm most definitely not, but who was in office in '86 again? both Democrats and republicans are responsible for raping the constitution to include the 2A. Democrats tend to be more vocal about it beforehand but neither can be trusted. stop throwing away your vote. vote libertarian.
