FMJ doesn't expand at all, and has a proven track record of just wounding big game. It also will tend to hold it's shape after penetrating clear through an animal and continue on for a very long distance, making it more dangerous to other hunters.
A JHP is not the same thing as a FMJ. A FMJ is completely closed on the front end.
Depending on what you are going to hunt, there are bullets specifically designed to expand rapidly and blow up explosively on small varmints.
There are more heavily constructed hunting bullets designed to mushroom and stay together for deep penetration and maximum organ damage on big game.
Need to know what you are going to hunt to be able to recommend any specific loads.

Probably because it does not expand much and would most likely pass right through the animal and could then continue on to hit another hunter, house, car, etc.
You want jacketed hollow points or jacketed soft points (same as HP, but typically with a lead flat nose and no hole), depending on your gun and what animal you are hunting.

The suggestion that all FMJ bullets don't expand is not correct.
55 grain FMJ bullets loaded in 5.56x45 military type ammo expand violently (fragment actually) violently at normal hunting distances.
Same is true for various (but not all) 122 grain bullets in 7.62x39.

For small game/varmints, use hollowpoints. For bigger game, softpoints.

not always true. 30-30 hollow points are marvelous deer medicine!
