That's an interesting setup on this soldiers rifle, considering night, urban deployment. Full size scope, and vertical front grip. I wonder why not an Acog. I'm assuming this is an A2?

I'm willing to bet money that, that is the same scope he hunts deer with.

I've heard a ton of stories about mom and dad sending scopes over for Jr.

Air Conditioners and ACOGS...... and maybe Jr's Leopold.

Note how far forward the scope must be mounted for proper eye relief. ACOGs have between 1.5" (for the 4x models) and 2.4" (3.5x models) of eye relief. Most conventional scopes, for example a Leupold 1.5-5X) have like 3.5" - 5" of eye relief, which means you must mount them very far forward - often requiring an extended rail such as the ARMS #36 EX/S-EX.

Actually, with the full length barrel and handgaurd rails, it looks to be a Marine style A4 does it not? So probably an M-16A3 with the handgaurd rails added afterward.

Perhaps it's what his unit acquired to set him up as the Designated Marksman? Although, I'd wonder how well it looks through the scope with it riding that low to the bore (well for an M-16/AR anyway w/flattop), and it looks like he's got one of those PEQ laser box thingys on top, plus the front sight post...

Yea, that's probably right. What was I thinking, it couldn't be an A2 because it's a flat top. Didn't have coffee yet.

I seriously doubt it's photoshopped, although it does look a little odd probably due to the street lighting. If you check the properties on the photo, it's linked off the Yahoo news server, they got it from AP. I just can't see any reason for them to mess with such a trivial photo.

It's an M16A4. The A3 has the fixed carry handle and has a full auto (not burst).

I have seen lots of privately purchased optics on weapons in Iraq.
