Someone told me that keeping magazines fully loaded for long periods of time can cause the springs to weaken. Could that be a reliability issue?

Keeping magazines fully loaded will not harm the magazine or springs. The act of expanding/contracting is what stresses the spring and causes it to wear out. I have magazines that have been fully loaded for over a decade, except when at the range and emptying/reloading them and they continue to work perfectly.

I would not use for self defense a magazine that had been left loaded for 10 yrs. Ten yrs worth of dust sounds like it could make for reliability issues.

I am curious though, how many times have you taken a magazine, loaded it, then 10 yrs later taken it to the range? I have never done that, nor can I think of any reason why someone would.

Not exactly what I meant....

Hasn't been loaded and sitting for ten years. Been fully loaded and used that all that time. The only time there are no bullets in the magazine is when at the range or during cleaning.

Hkmp5sd,

So you are loading the magazines, shooting them up at the range, then reloading them and keeping them loaded till your next range session?

If thats what you are doing, then that is not really the situation posed in the original post of this thread.

I have a old AR-7 rifle that been loaded for years couple mo ago dug out of trunk and fired away ran perfect just like it did back around 1979 when I bought it. That mag spends years at a time loaded and has never been a problem.

Although I change mine occasionally I don't think it hurts to leave them loaded. Like the one post mentioned I've heard loading and unloading stresses the springs more than leaving them loaded. One thing I myself do. I always load a magazine one rd short. Some mags are really hard to get the last rd in and I'm not sure about them being completely reliable.
