Just got my first hunting rifle, a Weatherby Vanguard in .30-06, and I am trying to decide which loads to accuracy tests on.

At this point I am working on eliminating different loads prior to testing them. Money is tight, and I don't want to pay money to test a load that won't be effective on game.

So how is the Fusion brand of ammo on game like Deer, Elk and Bear?

I am looking at the 165gr and 180gr loads.

Thanks in advance.

Hi. If you're not reloading, you really will have to try as many brands of ammo as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. 165's work well out of a .30-06 and will drop any game you're hunting with a properly placed shot. 180's will too, but there will be an increase in felt recoil. However, you shouldn't just grab a box and go hunting.
Try the Federal Fusion, but it may not shoot well enough out of your rifle. Two to three inches at 100 yards is good enough accuracy for most hunting out to about 200 yards. There are some guys on another forum who say the Fusion ammo shoots well out of their rifles.
Personally, I haven't used factory rifle ammo for 30 years. Reloads only. My ammo is tailored to my firearms.

itgoesboom,

I plan on accuracy testing this out of my rifle and if it shoots well trying it out next season. I like the price and it sounds like good stuff. It's a collaboration between Federal and Speer.

The Federal Premium HighEnergy 165-grain loads work very well in my '06. Three-shot groups around 3/4 MOA is common.

The only ammo which hasn't given me adequate hunting accuracy was some El Cheapo Winchester from Wal-Mart.

Almost any brand of ammo oughta shoot within two MOA, which is adequate for deer out to around 200 yards.

The main thing is whether or not the first shot from a cold barrel always hits the same point of aim as the day before.

i've gotten great results with Fusion .30-30.

i also like the plastic strips the cartridges come in. they fit nicely in a pocket.
