Hey there is a g3 clone up at a pawn shop for sale. I think i can pick it up in the 675-750 range. What should I looking for on this thing that would make it a good buy or crappy buy? Brands, serial numbers, styles? I have a FN FAL that I really like and have always wanted a G3 Clone.

The G3 is nice. Be careful though about the caliber. The Century 93 is a clone in 5.56. Yes, $700 does sound reasonable, but always handle and inspect the merchandise before you buy. Century Arms does well for almost all of its guns but for the AK and a few of its FAL builds.

OP said G3 clone. G3 is a CETME clone. BTW, my CAI CETME runs great. As with all CAI 'builds' YMMV

So does mine, but I looked at several before bringing this one home. $675 seems high for a CAI CETME, usually $500-550 at gun shows around here.

Good point Wally, a CAI CETME is a roll of the dice. Once running well, it's much cheaper then alternatives. But, the OP asked about a G3 clone...Pics would help us help the OP.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a well built CETME. And if the clone you're looking at is a PTR all the better. If it is a Century, it may be worth a roll of the dice. I've got a Century C91 and it is a flawless rifle in fit, finish, function, and accuracy. I love it.
For that price it better say PTR-91 on it. The century guns are a toss of the dice. There are lot of good ones and really bad ones too. I had a CEMTE (witch looks/works like a G3/HK91 but is not as good as one) and mine was great. But no so great that I didn't sell it.
Why is this?? How much better are the HK's??? We talking like .5 moa better??? Parts more available? Jams less??? Just so I can say F off to the guy next to me at the range with a PTR???
That statement was horribly vague on how a HK will benefit me more than a PTR. If there is some actual reason's for getting a HK over PTR I will deff. do that. If its just a different name on the side could care less.

Its an HK, its vastly superior in all of the ways you mentioned, it was a standard issue military rifle for the German army. Unfortunately it usually comes with a pretty high price and they dont show up on the used market very often. Nothing wrong with a clone, just get a good one.
Because original HK rifles don't exhibit problems I have seen with many of the clones:
Poor accuracy with many types of loads
Miss-machined claw mount bases
Excess headspace
Improperly installed barrels
Aluminum recievers
Non-fluted chambers (some)
Won't reliably cycle steel cased ball
Poor stock to reciever fitting
As for parts, I have never had to replace anything.

a friend of mine has a CETME from Century, took a little tuning of the extractor if I recall but now runs like a raped ape on cheap Tula steel cased and the German battle packs. It's surprisingly accurate as well.

I have an early SS CETME from Century that I really like and it has been flawless from day one, but the price you quoted is way high for any Century CETME I've seen. If, on the other hand, it is one of the imports by MARS then the price is way too low and you should run right over and snap it up.
