Simple question. If you can only have one what would you get for less than $1000? A DSA, Imbel Kit FAL, or a SAR-8, ORF/PTR G3 clone?

I like the HK91/G3 cause it's a much simpler design. No gas system to mess with and you don't have to worry about inch and metric parts. :scrutiny:

I'll take the FAL.

Once the gas "system" is set, and your inch/metric spare parts and mags are bought, you'll REALLY have nothing to worry about.

How is a stamped reciever G3 heavier than a milled steel reciever FAL? I don't have a G3.

FAL. DSA. New. Warranty. Extremely well built right here in the good old USA, and, should you need it, their customer service is excellent. After that I'd look at a kit build by one of the well known makers, Arizona Response Systems (I've owned one, no two, anyway, Mark does first class work), Arizona Expert Arms, Investment Grade Firearms (I've owned one, Jayson also does first class work), Ohio Rapid Fire (also owned one, Todd also does first class work) and a few others. Go over to the falfiles.com and ask them to rank the makers.

While my vote is for an FAL, if you're looking at SAR-8s...be absolutely sure to get the Greek made version (also owned one)....even if it costs you more money. The Greek made rifles are exact copies of HKs and were licensed by HK. The American version of the SAR-8 was not. I'd go with an ORF HK clone before a Springfield SAR-8. Springfields "lifetime" warranty isn't your lifetime, it's the lifetime of the rifle. :scrutiny: If they can't repair it, and remember they no longer stock parts, they offer you credit toward an M1A.

I have owned a HK G3 (Century c91 that was a perfect build...not typical Century crap) and a DSA STG 58A. I still own the FAL and sold the G3...here's why:

* Both are accurate for a MBR (2-3 MOA) ... HK fans will sy that their rifle is more accurate but I can find equal number of accurate / inaccurate G3's and FALs from people I know
* Both are 100% reliable (with early break in hiccups on both)
* Both have similar recoil but impulse is different

FAL wins on the following
* FAL has overall superior ergonomics for me
* FAL has bolt open (G3 does not)
* Couldn't reach either selector without changing grip...can fix that on FAL with L1A1 selector
* FAL mag release is easier to manipulate (assuming no paddle release on G3, if so then equal)
* FAL charging handle is in appropriate place (what idiot puts the charging handle near the muzzle of a rifle?)
* FAL breaks down/easier to clean and maintain eaiser than G3
* FAL has more simple locking mechanism
* FAL is "prettier" (subjective)
* FAL has adjustable gas system (but I personally don't see that as a big deal)

Here's where G3 wins
* Feels slightly more balanced/handy (subjective)
* G3 mags are better designed and snap in with more authority

That's it...usiing those criteria, FAL wins hands down for me. YMMV

That said, I will eventually buy a PTR91 (the only decent HK clone...save maybe Ohio Rapid Fire build). I've actually been in love with the HK91 since I was a kid...warts and all.

FAL.
Better ergonomics.
Cheaper mags.
Not picky on ammo.
Doesn't crush brass on firing so you can't reload it if you need to.
No polygonal rifling.
No monkeymotion in installing optics (STANAG? gyahhh..)
BIPOD!
Parts depots worldwide.
Should have been the Garand replacement. (Another story for another time. I LIKE M14's)

Regards,
Rabbit.
