Game Camera Mystery picture thread

A slim possibility. I am in theoretical Canada Lynx range, with occasional sightings well to the North of me. The cats I have tracked on property were definitely bobcat, one was at the extreme end of their maximum size. Based on what I see, the body shape in movement is not right for a canine...either dog, small wolf or coyote. The only dog I know of in the area is a Lab, definitely not that. I'm still going with bobcat. Hopefully he'll make a better appearance, would be nice to add one of these to my digital trophy collection (or perhaps a full body mount poised to pounce from the loft in my cabin). Anybody else have some mystery pics we can guess at?

I actually would have guessed mountain lion but the tail is too short. We have pictures of lion on our cameras from a couple years ago south of Wadena. Lynx don’t have a tail so must be a bobcat.

I don’t think we have flying squirrels in Minnesota. That’s a red squirrel.

Well,we do have Flying Squirrels in MN. As a kid growing up east of Ely, it was great fun to shine the bird feeders after dark on the little gliding rats.

Still have them because a friend of mine has a cabin about twenty miles up the Fernberg Trail, also east of Ely. One winter night several years ago, looking out his cabin window I asked him if there was any he had seen. Sure enough, same thing, spotted one with a flashlight in his birdfeeder.

Occasionally, they would fly out of the tree when cutting down hazard trees (particularly large dead aspen with woodpecker holes) along snowmobile trails.

I caught one in a pine marten set maybe thirty or so years ago, also.

These squirrels have larger eyes and kinda flat tails. You may not have FS around Brainerd, but trust me, they do exist in northern MN.(Bullwinkles too!);)

Well I'll be darned. Never seen one before. I've spent quite a bit of time up around Ely, Orr, and International Falls. Actually the most moose I have seen have been around Breckenridge.

The folds of loose skin at his side nails it as a flying squirrel not a red squirrel. Look again at the clear photo and it is apparent.

It looks like a lynx with its summer coat to me. Lynx have a shorter tail than bobcat and their rear legs are longer than the front so they kind of lean forward. Bobcat also usually have very visible spots.

Yes, common to have water tanks spread out on larger ranches that don't have a natural resource for it. <SNIP>
Whoever put the tank in place was thoughtful enough to provide a 'climb out stick' for those smaller animals that fall in and couldn't otherwise get out.

Indeed, we always place a couple of cinder blocks in our tanks to provide a 'climb out' route for small animals.

Yes, Canada Lynx are very rare in the lower peninsula. The reasons some of us think it could be a Lynx is the coat, the size, the long rear legs and the tail which has a black tip but no rings. We're hoping to get some better pics this year
