Garand barrel length/gas port

I got my first DCM the year before Kennedy got shot it came right to the house and the mailman knew exactly what it was. He sat down with me on the front porch and after I unboxed it he went over some points to check on my new rifle. I went to school with one of his sons and we just celebrated our 50th high school reunion first thing he asked "you still got that Garand?"

Actually when things went from DCM to CMP everything went downhill. It became more about money than civilian marksmanship.

Sometimes I feel that way too. But CMP is a corporation that is in business to make money. I wish that they would have restricted Garand sales more, but I bought some great surplus rifles that weren't available in the DCM era. If I have any regrets, I wish that I would have bought a couple more. Mainly .22's. I never got a Mossberg or a Kimber and the Remington 541's were a super deal.

The CMP did promote shooting Garands and Springfields at Camp Perry and in the regional games and they have become very popular events. Local clubs followed suit and many hold Garand matches now.

Say what you want, there are many who would be happier if all of those rifles went through a crusher. They are now on the street. Capitalism isn't always pretty, but it is efficient.

And this is why we can't have nice things. Greed. The purpose of the CMP is to distribute the surplus guns fairly and at reasonable prices, not to promote quick profit-making. Maybe there should be a limit of one per year.
Um,limit of one what ,seems to be few and far between. Maybe more will surface. I would like one nice one some day

Digging into my stash, I shot an honest 6” group today at 50 yards with HXP 77.
Getting ready to try some SL56.

Yeah I know Jeremy2171, but you know my rifles muzzle wear.
I’ve also got a little KA 72 and then going back further, some SL 45 red tip and black tip ammo in my stash also to try. I know black is AP. Is red incinerary or tracer or——?
It won’t change the results, but it’s fun to test it all the same.

Actually, the purpose of the CMP is to generate funds for their programs. They walk a fine line between keeping the volume of sales up and preventing profiting by consumers.

In the mid 2000’s before they put some limits on ammunition sales folks would back up to the CMP stores and overload their pick up truck. The CMP quickly ran out if ammunition and new Garand owners could not find ammunition. The CMP then put limits on ammunition purchases.

Around the same time, the management of CMP decided they could not police what rifle purchasers did with the riflies after the sale was complete. To minimize the uproar, they instituted the 12 per year limit. Enough to keep sales up but low enough to not be too limiting for buyers.

Also, they started auctioning rifles with higher collector’s value again to generate more funds.

Around this time frame, the purchasing requirements were made easier to meet but information was slow to get out. Many folks did not know about the CMP and thought the gun show resales were the only way to get a Garand.

Like it or not, I understand CMP’s position.

Well it seems to be all gone now.

Well it seems to be all gone now.

Just temporarily it seems. And they are taking orders for something called an "expert grade" in both 30-06 and .308. The limit is now 8 per year so they must still have rifles.

Our rifle inventory is limited at this time due to our log of backorders and the 7 week CMP shutdown due to COVID-19. Our stores were stocked before we left for quarantine and we did not pull the stock back because it would slow all processes. We hope to open up rifle types again once we have restocked our inventory and processed the majority of our backorders.

When the CMP North store reopens I may take the short ride and check out what they have. Maybe I grab one more complete rifle in .308 just to have another one. I wish they were still selling parts like a receiver since I have enough parts to build a few more less a few receivers.

This thread got me to thinking about my GCA (Garand Collectors Association) membership. I haven't gotten anything from them in awhile. Hell, my membership expired a year ago :). Sent them an Email and we fixed that all in a day. Normally I see notifications for my memberships in things like the VFW, GCA, and other organizations. Hell, at least with the NRA I am a life member so that can't expire till I expire. :) Guess I missed the GCA notification, this getting old sucks!
