Garand education needed

I'll try this again, don't know why it didn't work before.

I've always wanted a Garand. I've been blessed with an M1 carbine and 03A3 passed on by my Father-in-law. I'd like to complete the collection of WWII US rifles.

I used to live near Camp Perry and I'm kicking myself for not visiting the North Shore Store prior to moving 2 years ago.

It appears the CMP has two grades of rifles in my price range. Field and Service. Two makers are represented: Springfield and HRA. I'd like some guidance if anyone would care to share.

If I can get away with a Field grade, I'll have more $$$ left for Greek surplus ammo. I'm willing to be educated on all of this.

Thanks,

Get the better one you won't be dissappointed! My CMP Garand started life as a Service Grade but has been completely refinished.

A field grade would be perfectly fine...If you can hand pick it. Sometimes they are really nice and sometimes not so much. I'd go with a service and remove all doubt; save up and get a bulk about of ammo.

jpwilly, I'll say it again: That stock is ridiculously sweet...Where'd you get it?

I have a field grade Springfield Greek return M1 from CMP and am VERY happy with it for the price. The parkerizng was a bit worn towards the end of the barrel, (but the receiver is quite good), which I would expect from a 50+ year old military issued gun. the stock was dirty and discolored/mismatched, but had only minor scratches, so a little sandpaper, some stain,BLO and tung oil, and it loo great again. Most importanty, is a REALLY good shooter.
If I had the option and the extra money, sure, I'd get the highest grade available but, that isnt always an option, and I was certainly not dissappointed in my FG.
