I've had my Garand for about 6 months now, and it is fast becoming my favorite rifle. I noticed a couple things with it, and I was wondering if that was normal.

One, there it significant play of the op rod/gas piston in the gas cylinder. I have no reliability issues yet, but how much much tolerance should there be in there?

Two, on the last round, my clip gets throw about eight inches into the air, and about three inches to the right. What's the deal with that? it scares the living crap out of people when they shoot it and it lands on their arm or something.

Three, the safety is really hard to manipulate. Any solutions to that or is it normal?

Thanks folks!

um, thats 100% normal. if anything yours may be ejecting the clip weakly

There is always "play" between the rod and cylinder. The rod is much smaller in diameter than the ID of the cylinder. What's important are the diameters of the piston and the front end of the cylinder. You can measure the piston with a micrometer. The cylinder requires a gauge to corrrectly measure.

All in all, if it's functioning reliably, then it's probably in spec.

Sounds either perfectly normal or maybe even a little weak to me.

If you think stronger eject of the clip is needed.... try replacing the clip ejector spring.

The M1 safety is usually a bit stiff (It's safer that way....), but whether or not yours is outside the norm can only be told by you trying the safety's on several other M1's for comparison.

"...my favorite rifle..." There's something about the M1 Rifle that no other rifle has.
Go here for free .pdf TM and FM manuals. Note the need for the provided UN & PW. http://www.biggerhammer.net/manuals/
You may want to buy a copy of Hatcher's Notebook and Hatcher's Book of the Garand too. About $30 each from your local gun shop or Amazon. The former gives developement info. The latter has more of that but also a trouble shooting chapter.
The gas piston diameter(the end of the op rod) should be at least .525". The barrel diameter at the splines should not be less than .5995". The inside diameter of the gas cylinder should be no more than .532". You'll need an inside micrometer to measure it. There is a guage, but that won't be easy to find.
"...clip gets thrown..." That'll do nicely. Had one go straight up and straight back down, past my nose, one time. At least they don't get hot.

All sounds good. You know your clip ejector is bad when after the second round it ejects the clip and the remaining six live rounds. :neener: I have actually had this condition with mine and needed to get it corrected. :banghead:

All sounds normal to me.

Both of my M1s have a stiff safety but only when engaging the safety. It should be light enough to just use your trigger finger to disengage it.

rounds should eject at the 2 o'clock position.

when they start ejecting over your head (6 o'clock) or forward (noon), its time to clean
