Finally got all of my paperwork together and mailed today. Now comes the extremely painful and long wait for my CMP service grade HRA Garand, 200 rnds of ammo, and 25 enbloc clips. I don't know that I have ever been this anxious to get a firearm. I guess a big part of it is that you never know exactly what you are getting as far as stock material or condition until it shows up at your door. I have seen some examples of service grades that looked pristine and some that were a little beat up. Is it going to have a birch or walnut stock? Just so many unknowns. Whatever it is I'm sure I will be thrilled with it. Now, what do I do for the next few months to keep from going crazy??

Went to the north store not quite a year ago and got a HRA SGS & 2 cans of ammo. Had to go back for more before summer was over..... Order more ammo while you're waiting! A blast to shoot, my non-shooter wife was hitting clay birds at 100 yards about every other shot.

Keep checking your account daily like everyone else does that orders through the CMP. My HRA looked to be unfired with a barrel that gauged in the new range.

I placed an order of HRA last June and received a Springfield in mid September. It was made in 1942 and has some dings on wood, but shoots great. No complaint here, I love this rifle. I just placed another order for HRA last week and hopefully can get a "prettier" one. ;)

While you wait, go to Garand Collectors Assn. so you can order one of their DVDs about the M1. Good info and they do interviews with two Medal of honor recipients as well as a good clip with John C. Garand talking about the M1.

Worth the $10.00...order two and gift one to a shooting buddy.

You're gonna' love that rifle!

Mark

What store did you order it from? My wife and I were at Camp Perry, Ohio in 2011 at the national matches and I visited the CMP store with a friend. They had about every grade of M1 you could imagine.
There's a guy works there named Bob who is a real jerk.

That is correct. I don't live too far from the Anniston store, and I considered going by there but it was my understanding they have little to no stock.

You're in for a looong wait my friend - but it's totally worth it in the end!

It looks like HRA service grades are taking about 1-1/2 to 2 months delivery at present.

I am not sure how long 2013 deliveries were like but deliveries were 4 to 6 months back in 2009 for a while.

Just went back and looked at the order time line thread at the CMP forum, looks like deliveries in mid 2013 were in the 4 month, plus/minus range.

I just mailed the paperwork wednesday. I would assume they will receive it maybe Monday. I have read that the DBU emails can take a while themselves. I guess all I can do is wait not so patiently.

don't order the DVD yet. My HRA Service Grade arrived 3 weeks ago and they threw the DVD in the box for free. Gun looks new. Barrel is not new, but still very young. Lots of life left in it.

How long between sending in your order and receiving the rifle if you don't mind me asking?

jacob2745, go to the CMP forum and under the Garand sub forum, there is a thread on Order Timeline. Lots of folks post their progress on receiving their rifles.

While you are waiting (likely weeks not months currently), visit the GarandGear website. Tons of excellent, well illustrated maintenance and tips tutorials.

You will definitely want to order more of the HXP ammo from CMP.

You are gonna really enjoy owning a Garand!!!

M1 Garand

Good luck with your "new" rifle.....I have several Garands and shot one in service rifle competition in the late 70's thru the 80's.....gained a lot of respect for that "wood and steel" rifle, the 30-06 round and the shooters who could make that rifle "walk and talk" at 200,300,500yds and beyond. Have a lot of fond memories of those matches & the M-1 Garand.

I picked up a Springfield (service grade special) for my Son and Winchester (service grade) for myself early last year from the North Store last spring. Selection was good then and quality of wood on them varied a lot. I would have been afraid to order one. Went back in December and got a HRA for a friend. Prices had jumped from spring to late winter but quality was good. Measurements on all three I bought were excellent to like new. Had a lot of fun picking them out. Lots of fun to shoot. :)

I placed my order for a Springfield special, new wood, barrel, etc, back on the third week of October 2013. I picked up my Garand two weeks ago from my FFL.
