Good, I have your attention. You will now explain to me why you think the Garand is the best thing since sliced bread. If you don't think it is, you will explain as well. I am completely neutral. 200 words or less, Double spaced. You may now begin.

The Garand represents a time in history that should never be forgotten. When you ask an average person what an American rifle looks like, two images typically come to mind, one being a Garand and the other an M16. The images of the Garand and M16 are iconic.

That and the Garand is a fine rifle to shoot. It's a rifleman's rifle.

Historically:
1. A marvel of 1930s and '40s firearms innovation and manufacturing capability.

2. A rifle which at the company, platoon, and squad level truly influenced the outcome of WWII.

Today:
3. Still a robust, accurate, reliable and fun-to-shoot firearm with parts and ammunition available.

4. The "intangibles" which cannot be explained. It either speaks to you or it doesn't.
;):)

The Garand is a beautiful mesh of wood and metal that looks good together. It is not wood bolted to metal or all plastic, it is art. When you handle the rifle it has a fine heft and you can feel the fine lines of old world craftsmanship that was mated with mass production.

Loading the weapon with an eight round clip is an accomplishment if you are quick enough to keep the bi**h from biting your thumb. While being a fine weapon she is temperamental and can be unforgiving. You next slip off the saftey with your trigger finger and sight and fire the weapon. She kicks you as she sends a round down range that will rock the world of a target up to and beyond 500 yards.

After eight rounds you hear a distinct pling as the clip is ejected. Arm chair warriors say this has killed many GI's. If the enemy heard this and attacked you your buddy probably got the guy or else you could throw a clip and then shoot up to eight guys coming to get you.

Finally it is just owning something so important in American history. The Germans had the Tiger tank, the British had the Spitfire, the Japanese had the Zero, and the French had the white flag. The Garand in the hands of the American GI won the war. :p

What made Elvis special? What makes a Harley a Harley? Have you ever cruised in a 66 Mustang or a 57 Chevy convertible? Like Tinpig said, it's the intangibles. You will never, not now, not ever, find the words to truly describe what makes a Garand special. Lot's of guns shoot straight, some shoot even better. Lots of guns have engaged in conflict, some are even better designed for conflict being lighter and faster. But it is now, and will always be, a symbol of what the U.S. is capable of and what was accomplished by the Free and the Brave.

I'll just quote Joe Dirt:

Kicking Wing: Why is that good?
Joe Dirt: Well, duh, might as, might as well ask why is a tree good? Why is the sunset good? Why are boobs good?

You either get it or you don't. I didn't until I bought one and even before that first round went down range I understood.

The US Rifle Cal .30 M1 Popularly Known As The Garand.

"BLAM!" 8x, and "Ping!"

If you have shot one, and heard 'The Garand Song' no explanation is required. If you haven't, no explanation will do.

A REAL Rifleman's Rifle (with tribute to Lucas McCain and his tricked-out Big-Loop Win 94)

I've always liked the garand. But I really fell in love with them the first time I detail stripped one and took a good look at the way the action works. It looks fragile and complicated... but it is ingenious. It seems like every part in the receiver does more than one thing. Like an amazing little clock that goes blam! blam!blam!blam!blam!blam!blam!blam!PING! :D

"Loading the weapon with an eight round clip is an accomplishment if you are quick enough to keep the bi**h from biting your thumb."

NOT!

It is easy to load. The oprod will not move forward until pressure is released on the clip.

This is an urban myth.

If you load it with your right hand you can put your palm into the op-rod handle and keep the bolt back until your thumb is out of your way.

that brought a smile to my face. i like it. others may have their ar's and such. but there will be nothing like a tried and true weapon that was good enough for a world war and many other skirmishes. its a piece of history that you can hold and feel and fire! a symbol of a time gone by, yet just as solid now as it was then.

General George S. Patton; "No greater implement of war has ever been invented." :D

Forrest Gump; "And thats all I have to say about that." ;)

This is this! It's not something else, it's this!

Don't pull it if you don't plan to use it, and don't use it if you don't plan to kill!

ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR MEN AND WOMEN OVER THERE.

Im with starkadder. If Patton says so. That enough for me. Man i have wanted 1 real bad ever since FLYEN BRYON through up his pics

Sadly I am not allowed to own one in the UK, but if the time comes where I can own semi-auto centrefire rifles, I will HAVE to get a Garand.
'Cos it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that PING!

Here is one of our nicest moderators firing it:

What makes a King out of a slave? Courage.

What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage.

What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist or the dusky dusk?

What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage.

What makes the Sphinx the 7th Wonder? Courage.

What makes the dawn come up like THUNDER?! Courage.

What makes the Hottentot so hot?

What puts the "ape" in ape-ricot?

Whatta they got that I ain't got?

My god FlyinBryan and highorder, those are beautiful! My dad keeps saying that he wants to gett a CMP Garand, so i'll tell him when he gets home he better order one before they disappear.

It is the intangibles that make a Garand special. If it were not used in WWII/Korea, and say an M16 was used instead, the Garand would not be considered special. When my dad orders the Garand i'll make sure he orders an M1 carbine for myself. Now I just need a 1903... ah already have a K98 and more bolt actions in the near future...

I have just bought an shot my first M1 Garand this year..a CMP 1942...I have owned an shoot AR's since 1980. The other day I overheard them talking....
AR "My big brother is a M-16"
M1 "I'm his grandfather"
AR "He fought in Vietnam an Iraq."
M1 "I was in Vietnam too, an Korea, an all of WWII."
AR "The Army says I have a effective range of 400 meters."
M1 "If you can see it, I can kill it."
AR "I'm very accurate, when the enemy sticks his head up over that log, or behind that brick wall I can get him."
M1 "I don't have to wait, I just shoot through it."
AR "Bet I can kill that groundhog with a headshot at 300 meters."
M1 "Bet you can't kill that grizzly 30 feet away."

I finally had to seperate them so I could get some sleep.

1. It's made of WOOD and STEEL (...as all rifles should be).

2. It fires a big buck-woody cartridge that goes through things that are very far away.

3. Your father, grandfather, and/or great-grandfather preserved your freedom with one.

4. It makes the sweetest pinging sound you'll ever hear. (I like the sound so much I made windchimes out of en-bloc clips.)

5. It has spirit and will bite your thumb if you are careless with it.
