Anyone catch the chain fire of the Remington used for the starting gun? Had that happen 1 and only 1 time in '79 when I first got a c&b: revolver and didn't have any crisco. Never let that happen again!

I saw that and wondered if it was a chain fire or I'd mis-perceived what I'd seen ... didn't really want to go back as I was more interested in watching the contest proceed.

And, uh, yeah, whether you use an under ball lub disc or crisco, bore butter, something should definantly be used to avoid chain fires for sure.
I suspect that gun was using BP charges w/o ball .... but still, safety is always relevant!

Use cream of wheat over your powder, use your loading leaver or a seperate loader to compress it, and you'll be ok. If your cream of wheat is old and dry, put a drop of gun oil over it in each chamber and you won't have chain fires. But this won't work on the ".44" navies, they use .36 loading levers, you'll have to take the cylinder out and use a .44 loading tool.

This was our last shoot out for the season, and shows why the old timers missed their targets when they were close. Nno wind, can't see your opponent!

You're probably right... it was probably just a powder load but still...wow! Speaking of filler, I used to use cornmeal to fill up the rest of the cyl when I loaded 25 grains ...then cornmeal then ball just to seat the ball closer to the forcing cone...worked really well and great accuracy!
