Gentlemen I need some assistance on a paper for my English course.

In my English course we are writing argumentative essays. We must pick a topic and then argue for it.

The topic that I have chosen is that the Citizens of the state of Wisconsin should have the ability to legally carry a concealed weapon.

Any idea's where I can find sources of good quality information for this?

The problem with the world today is that there is so much information out there and its very difficult to sift through.

I have started with the FBI website and the NRA website. There are also multiple cases from Wisconsin in the last few months where people who were carrying openly legally were harassed by the police. I can use those too, but do you have any suggestions on where I can look for more quality information.

Glock, a part of the learning experience is weeding through the crap. When your done, if it makes you feel better... put your paper out on the internet and make it that much harder for the next guy.

Glock as an English major in my fourth year at UGA, I truly feel your pain . Searching the internet for information has become almost a second nature to everyone, if you don't know something then Google it . The only positive thing about that is that our papers no longer require "hard" sources from the library, instead we can pull up all the articles we need through the various databases online.

I don't know what your school calls it but I am sure you probably have something similar, but at UGA we have access to all of our resources for online articles from the library, JSTOR, GALILEO, etc...on our student homepage when we log into the site.

Also I have found either Harvard or Princeton or one of the Ivy league schools has great online resources for Supreme Court cases online, which helped me with a paper on Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld.

Check out the GunFacts.info web site. They have a lot of useful information. They have footnotes on each page of their PDF. That means you can look up the actual study and pull the inormation for the primary work.

That should take you in the right direction. Once you pull up the original works you and can start looking at other works by the same scholars.

I would start with the history of America, its founding fathers, and the principles they incorporated into our constitution, and their own personal beliefs on the matter.

There are so many more interesting arguments to pursue in the context of an English course than some arcana of local state law.

If you want an A for this paper, pick something challenging. Argue for the primacy of descriptive vs. prescriptive grammar, or the validity of idiolect trumping the concept of a "standard" dialect. You've got a million ways to go - why pick the jejune?

Back in about the 1700s (IIRC) an Englishman calculated the survival value of looking like a harmful organism. The toxic monarch and mimicking viceroy butterflies are perhaps the most well known example. Concealed carry works the same way, that frail looking old man might be carrying a gun as well as his wallet. The advantage of this, in addition to the many excellent suggestions above, is that it is worked out in a gun free environment. You cannot argue that Bates had an axe to grind one way or the other about concealed carry.

All kidding aside, visit the library. Learning how to do reasearch is an important skill to develop. I would try and find books on the topic that cite back to original sources.

I'm grinding my teeth here...when I took this in college, the professor specifically advised against using gun laws or abortion as a subject. The reason being that it's a training exercise. You don't want to get emotionally involved with the subject.

You may be able to get more information from Gun Owners of America and Jews for Preservation.... It is often the Non-Profit banner at the bottom of the THR page. I think they are based in Wisconsin.

as much as i feel you desire to try and take a stand and try to persuade people to see our side the CCW argument (I was the same way my freshman year, three years ago), i dont think college assignments are the right place. When it comes to education and dealing with professors, give them exactly whatever it is they want, and they will eat it up and you shall have a good grade.
