I have to go to Atlanta for 3 days next month. As usual I'll have to disarm while riding the city's subways and buses and still be legal. The local BG's of course ,won't be so accommodating.
As a frequent visitor to GA,its hard to understand why this law is on the books.Certainly PT is an area where law abiding citizens need all the protection they can muster.Macon,Savannah,Columbus, the whole state is subject to this discrimination.
My neighboring state of Florida has allowed carry on PT since our CCW Law went into effect in 1987.To my knowledge ,not one incident involving the arrest of a CCW permit holder has ever occurred in 21 years on FL PT.
Next to the infamous 'Public Gathering Statute',this is the most vexatious anti-gun law the Peach State has on the books.
Are there any Georgians out there ,or anyone who can tell me how this came to pass ,and if there is any hope in the forseeable future for this irksome and dangerous law to be wiped off the books?

The Georgia gun group Georgia Carry is working hard on overcoming Georgia's faulty gun laws.
I believe several pro gun bills are on the table in the GA legislature.

I was talking to a police officer on scene the other night( I am a volunteer firefighter) about places I can carry. He told me I cannot carry at Wal-Mart, the mall, etc. He told me those fell under the "public gathering" restriction. I was flabbergasted. He told me to get with the probate court and they would give me more definitive answers as to where I could and could not carry. I hope he was wrong. I mean, what's the point if those places are off limits?

That police officer is incorrect. In my experience LEO's are probably the worst source of legal information you will find.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about the public gathering statute, but there have been opinions issued by the State Attorney General that define it pretty well. A "public gathering" is for the most part limited to the examples listed on the back of your GFL (political rally, sporting event, church function, etc.) You can carry at the mall, at Wal Mart, etc. There are a couple of bills going through the GA legislature to reform the horribly antiquated firearms laws in GA.
