Subject: SB528 State "BATF" Bill Delayed

(Atlanta, Monday, March 29) -- Just before a crucial hearing last Thurday on the "State BATF" bill SB528, sponsor Sen. Ross Tolleson (R-Perry) pulled it off the Georgia House Special Judiciary Committee agenda to let the heat cool down.

Good work gun rights activists! It was your calls, faxes, and e-mails that turned up the pressure and caused the delay.

But the fight ain't over yet. The legislature resumes Wed. Mar. 31 and there's still time for Mr. Tolleson to pass his bill. That's why it's crucial to keep the heat on the politicians.

It's a common trick at this stage of a legislative battle for the compromisers to pull back and try to lull you into easing up. Then they strike again quickly to catch you off guard.

If you missed round one, here's your chance to jump in and land a good lick.

If you did NOT already respond, it's vital that you take action as soon as possible so we can keep up the pressure to make sure SB528 is killed dead. Please go to the action items below.

SB528 delegates the authority of the General Assembly to the State Revenue Commissioner, giving him a blank check to write new rules and regulations over the firearms business.

First, the anti-gunners tried to bankrupt gun makers with bogus lawsuits. Now they want to strangle firearms, ammunition, and accessories suppliers with red tape. You're the one who'll suffer in the end.

Just for starters, an anti-gun Governor could use this to order a statewide triggerlock mandate, or put gun shows out of business. In any event, SB528 gives the new "state BATF" unchecked powers to bully firearms dealers, with potentially hefty fines for minor technical violations.

Co-sponsoring SB528 with Sen. Tolleson is anti-gun Sen. Gloria Butler (D-Clarkston). Mr. Tolleson claims he's for guns, but last year he was one of the few elected Republicans who sold out your gun rights by joining the Democrats to vote down the Self-Defense amendment in the Senate.

SB528 passed the State Senate Mar. 12. Mr. Tolleson misled the Senators by telling them it was just a "little housecleaning bill" and all it did was transfer state licensing of firearms dealers from one department to another. It's an open question whether he did this intentionally or, he didn't even know what was in his bill. Either way, he breached the integrity of the legislative process.

If you already responded to the first alert, you can still help spread the word by making a copy of this and taking it to your favorite gun dealer. It's the dealers who'll take it on the chin first.

ACTION ITEMS

1. Choose one (1) of the Republican representatives on the House Special Judiciary Committee, call their office right away and ask them to do everything in their power to kill the "State BATF" bill SB528. If these Reps. feel they have enough public support from around the state, they will almost certainly use extraordinary tactics against this bad legislation. That's why your call is vital. If you can't get through by phone, use e-mail, or both. Here are their legislative office phone numbers:

Rep. Brian Joyce (R-Lookout Mountain) 404-656-0265 [email protected]

Rep. Bobby Franklin (R-Marietta) 404-656-0152 [email protected]

Rep Tom Knox (R-Cumming) 404-656-0194 [email protected]

2. Pick one (1) of the Democrats on the House Special Judiciary Committee, call their office and tell them you're against SB528. You may not change their mind, but it's important to signal SB528 is a "hot potato" and it will help tie them up. Here are their legislative office phone numbers:

Rep. Curtis Jenkins (D-Forsyth) 404-656-7857 [email protected]

Rep. Curt Thompson (D-Norcross) 404-656-0177 [email protected]

Rep. Randal Mangham (D-Decatur) 404-656-0126 [email protected]

Rep. Nikki Randall (D-Macon) 404-656-0109 [email protected]

Rep. Barbara Mobley (D-Decatur) 404-656-5087 [email protected]

Rep. Joe Heckstall (D-East Point) 404-656-0220

3. Contact Sen. Tolleson's office by phone or fax and let him know that since he's from a pro-gun district, he should be working for gun owners, instead of against them like he's been doing. To make double-sure your message gets through, call or fax his district office too:

Sen. Ross Tolleson 404-463-8056 (phone) 404-463-1386 (fax) [email protected]

District Office: 478-746-6262 (phone) 478-987-5243 (fax)

4. Forward a copy of this e-mail to everybody you know who owns a gun.

There was another thread around here that I wanted to respond to, but this one is close enough...

Here's another email I recieved on this topic...

Dear Mr. Xxxx:

Thank you for contacting me about SB 528. Like you, I have concerns about this legislation. As a result, I do not intend to call SB 528 up for a vote in the House Special Judiciary Committee.

Again, thanks for contacting me and please let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

With best regards, I am

Sincerely,

Curtis Jenkins
State Representative
District 93

From another email I got.....
(Atlanta, Thursday, April 1) -- The "State BATF" bill SB528 by Sen. Ross Tolleson (R-Perry) died in the Georgia House Special Judiciary Committee yesterday as the clock ran out on the normal deadline for State Senate bills to clear committee in the House.

Good work gun rights activists! It was the heat generated by your calls, faxes, and e-mails that killed this underhanded attack on the Georgia firearms trade. You should get a well-deserved pat on the back.

But stay on your toes: there's still a small chance that the SB528 language could be grafted onto other legislation during the last two days remaining in the session. The chance of that happening is small, but CSG will be at the Capitol watching the politicians to see if they try to pull any last minute tricks. If they do, you'll be the first to know.
