SB528 is still alive & well in the Georgia House Special Judiciary Committee.
Sen. Tolleson wrote,
to Amish Bill: "Because we could not get all sides to agree on the language in the bill I decided to table the bill."
and to Nancy: "Because everyone seemed to have problems with the bill at a late date I moved to withdraw the bill."
First of all, the bill has not been tabled. To do so, since it already passed the Senate, it would have to come up in House committee or on the floor of the House and it hasn't yet.
Mr. Tolleson seems to be struggling with the intricacies of the legislative process. Nor has it been "withdrawn" in the sense that the author has irrevocably removed it from further consideration.
What happened was that, before last Thursday's committee hearing, Mr. Tolleson merely asked that the bill be pulled off the agenda for that day. As of this morning, SB528 still sits in the House Special Judiciary committee awaiting further instructions as to whether or not it will move, or else sit and die as the session winds down and the clock runs out. But right now, SB528 is still alive.
Regardless of what happens to SB528, the issue is becoming a matter of ethics.
Mr. Tolleson committed a serious breach of ethics, and what he needs is the smart whack of some old-fashioned "edercatin" out behind the woodshed.
Please pass it on.
