Gerber Mk 2 Fighting knife

Hey everyone
I recently purchased an older Gerber Mk 2 Fighting Knife from a freind who was in the Military in the late 80's early 90's. The knife was definitly carried in the field by the look of the nylong scabbard but it has its original sharpening stone and the blade and handle are in good shape. And It has the serations of both sides of the blade at the waist of the blade.

Anyone else have one of these knives...what is your opinion of it.

I have two from the Vietnam era, as well as a MKI boot knife and a sharpening steel in a folding leather pouch.

They are an O.K. fighting / stabbing / "sneak up behind a sentry and take him out" knife.

Not much good for anything else really.

But they are becoming quite collectible.

I'm a fan of the G MKII...its a hellofa cool knife IMHO. But thats only my opinion.

I still got mine from military days I belive the Randall MK 1 was a better all around knife. and still is.

I was in the Infantry from the early 80's to the early 90's. I bought a Gerber Mk2 from the PX sometime in my first couple of years in. It's a stainless model and after it's first trip to the field, I wrapped the aluminum handle with the black cotton friction tape you used to find. Over the years, the coating of the tape has fused into a single mass and it still has a nice feel to it.

I forced that knife to do a lot of things it wasn't designed to do and only a very few things it was designed for. It was good in its time but now it sits in the back of the knife drawer, still sharp and still ready, but I am much happier with a lot of other knives. As a using knife, I would suggest that you might be happier doing the same and getting something more suited to the task at hand.

Great piece for any blade collector. Rather impractical for everyday use. But collecting knives and firearms is not always about being practical now is it?
