get home bag pistol

I'd lose a whole lot of sleep if some scum-bag broke into my truck and stole a working gun & ammo to use in an ever escalating life of crime!
I had a gun stolen from my truck in the parking lot where I used to live. Until I moved, I never shook the fear I would get mugged (or worse) with my own gun at my doorstep.

I carry spare ammo/mags in my "get home bag," but I prefer the gun on me. I'm looking to get a secure lockbox, though.

I agree a police trade in Glock or M&P would be a good choice if you went with something other than your carry gun.

R.O.,

Don't you hate it when you get off topic holier-than-thou lectures?

And recommendations for a gun you said you do not want?

My choice would be a CZ-82 (or the 83). I brought a surplus canvas flap holster that has a pouch for a spare magazine so I have 24 rounds and my gun in a neat, weather proof package. I also have a spare leather case for a single magazine that looks like a holder for a folding knife or something. So that gives you three magazines for total of 36 or 37 rounds if you keep one in the chamber in two packages you can wear on your belt should you need to hike out.

Bersa Thunder in .380 or in 9mm caliber. Aluminum frame (no rust), so lighter than the CZs if you're concerned about weight. If not, the CZs are hard to beat, as are the Makarovs. Bersa also makes a carry-nine with a polymer frame and DAO mechanism (BP9.)

The Taurus PT709 seems to be the one Taurus "got right"; it's quite well-respected, and might serve your needs as well.

I really do, but I understand where they are coming from, I just think they are jumping to conclusions. Because I plan on leaving a gun in my car that is intended for a get home bag people tend to assume that I plan on doing nothing to secure it.

I plan on securing it to the best of my abilities (and I do appreciate some of the suggestions made for securing my pistol), my statement was made to imply that I accept that some thieves are determined enough to find a way past whatever security measure I have selected, or worse yet they steal my car and now have both.

That plus I don't want to be attached to the gun for anything more than its monetary value should it become a situation where ditching it could potentially increase my chance of survival.

As for the glock statement, I just have a general aversion to polymer guns, I know they work well for a lot of people but have decided against them for my own personal reasons and knew that is the first gun everyone would suggest. Besides, I think excluding them makes for some more interesting answers to the question, I mean if I didn't have anything against polymer pistols than glock would be the best choice and this thread would be pointless.

R.O.,

When I see blanket statements about never leaving their gun in their vehicle it makes me wonder if they really carry. In my state (and many others) businesses can post no firearms allowed along with some government buildings. So this means my Roscoe (all my handguns are named Roscoe) has to wait in my truck while I conduct my shopping/business and at work.

Right now my favored truck Roscoe is a P-64 in 9x18. Since magazines are not readily available (mostly internet order item) I remove the magazine from it and slip it into my pocket when I have to leave it in my truck. (The signs only says no firearms, nothing about loaded magazines except for Government buildings). While this will most not likely prevent its theft it gives the thief a useless gun with hard to find magazines. And I only paid $150.00 for it.

Based on reports like the one I have linked I am seriously considering the SCCY 9mm when I find one in the lower $200.00 price range.

If you hate fantastic plastic, then why not stick with a revolver? I'm sure you can score a Model 10 in good condition.

Besides, it'll keep longer sealed up in a vacuum sealed bag in some sort of portable safe. You won't have to worry about going bad, but you should change out the ammo annually due to the effects of temperature.

The first post inspired me to go looking for car safe solutions:

I like the first one since it's $64 and the cable can loop through struts under the seat.

Yeah, if you don't like polymer frames you could look for an old S&W or Ruger .357, preferably stainless, and call it good. Or you may also see if you can track down one of the SIG P-6's (basically a P-225) that were floating around a couple years ago if you like the 9mm. I had a P-225 once and really wish I'd been smart enough to keep it!

Post deleted since this will be a backup gun.

It turns out you a stack of Ruger and S&W revolvers. Any would be perfect in this role.

Get a Hi Point If you need to ditch it or toss in river for some reason Your not out any thing

I used to carry a AR-7 in my bag 3 extra mags and 200 rounds of mini mag.

Your thread started me thinking about what I might buy for the same situation. I just saw a used Tec P11 in an LGS for $229. I had one once and sold it to upgrade, but it or a P9 would fit the bill nicely.

IMHO a get me home gun does not need to be concealable, so I would pick a hi capacity Semi auto in 9mm/40/45 large frame with at least 3 mags. It would be gun locked in a locked box. My XD-45 and 39 rounds of +P .45acp will ge me thru anything I may encounter in the 13 miles from work to home. When I am able to conceal carry (Illinois :banghead:) about 1/3 of my daily errands will be in No carry areas, so I must have secure storage in my car.
If I was faced with truly dangerous travels (Katrina like) I would pack my AR with the XD as CCW/backup.

If it were me, I'd shop the police trade ins, such as at Bud's guns for reliable & relatively inexpensive semi-autos- like the S&W M-P P9 trade ins.

+1 on the secure storage - I like the concept of those RAC products too, especially combined with a kevlar bag.

Since the gun isn't for instant defensive use, one option for long term vehicle gun storage, short of a lock box, is to take a key part of the gun and store it elsewhere.

IE; store the slide release in the ashtray or console. Should the gun be stolen, it's useless without that part.

That said, I'd want a gun I'm familiar with and could shoot well enough to defend my life with. No Hi-points or other bottom tier guns for me.

I'd look at the SD-9 or whatever it is by S&W. If metal is required, then any 3rd Gen S&W or Ruger P-85/89/90/91/93

Although theft is a real concern with any firearm I assign or leave in a vehicle on a permanent basis, I will not use a junk pistol as a method to try and mitigate a potential loss. If I need a gun to save my life, I want it to be something that I consider reasonable to that task, very reliable and within my means to purchase. A $200 surplus pistol just doesn't fit the bill.

I had a Hi Point once. It NEVER failed to fire. I bought it on a whim and sold it the same way but wouldn't be afraid to bet my life on it. (other than it was a 9mm)

I'm building a get home bag to leave in the truck and would like to get a pistol for it should I find I need the bag and for some reason was not carrying a pistol that day.

I would like to get a gun that is either 380, 9mm, or 45acp (calibers I stock up on already), preferably something on the compact side (not sub compact), preferably steel.

And above all else, not terribly expensive (less than 500 preferably), if anyone ever broke into my vehicle and stole the bag I wouldn't want to lose any sleep over the cost of replacing it.

And at the risk of being flamed, No glock, not hating on them, but I'm glocked out.

Any ideas?
Exactly right application for a High Point. Reliable, inexpensive, durable, accurate, easy to shoot.

I'd go with a used CZ 75B 9mm for around $300.00. I just picked up a new one for $489.00.

Cost of a firearm may or may not make a difference in reliability and effectiveness. But for SD/HD, one should always use what they are proficient with and have confidence in, after it has shown itself to be reliable. Other folks should not need to question their choice, but do the same.

My buddy got a stallard arms 9mm from his dad a while back. His dad put a few hundred rounds through it, and had said the guy he bought it from had put a couple hundred through as well. That was back in the early 90s. It was sitting until my friend aquired it and we put a hundred or so rounds through it as well. Then decided to clean it. It obviously has never ever been cleaned in the last 20ish years its been since it was new. I've never seen so much dirt and grime and pocket fuzz etc in a gun. But yet it functioned flawlessly with the cheapest 9mm ammo we could find before cleaning it. I would have no trouble trusting my life to a hi point, espescially if it gets cleaned regularly. I've been on the lookout for a nice used one for a couple weeks now just to store in my truck.

Higher price doesn't always mean higher quality.

But that's ok as it leaves more surplus firearms for those of us that recognize quality regardless of what country it was made in.

Of course not but I prefaced my comment detail with "junk pistol" for a reason. Speaking generally though, a $500 pistol that you buy new is typically a better more reliable choice than some worn pistol that has happened to survive some foreign war. Perhaps some old surplus $200 Makarov from 1951 will continue to function well enough to defend its owner in 2014 but if you make that decision primarily from a consideration of potential loss due to theft... that seems rash.

S&W SD9VE. It's the same size as a Glock 19, has smoother egronomics, is very reliable, and cost around $379.... Not to be confused with the SW9 sigma.

Awesome pistol for the money.
