....and Ladies. I want you all to consider something. Is the "panic" and run-up on guns simply and only a reaction to what the public anticipates concerning the government's intention to ban certain firearms? Or is something else in play here? Is it possible that the People instinctively sense that things in society are just, well, a bit dangerous? I always believed that most people have a "sense", so to speak, maybe an intuition, that allows them to prepare for some event. Is it possible that the run-up on firearms is in reaction to what many sense to be some hard times to come? And I'm not talking Chinese invasion here, or even armed oppression by our beloved and giving government (ahh-hemmm). What I speak of it violence by some of our fellow "Americans". I speak of the Bill Ayers of the country, the OWS crowd, the many, many avowed Marxists within our borders. Will they begin a stronger, more direct effort at waging a sort of "warm" war against the rest of the country. They have politicians in place that gladly serve them. I don't know the answer, but give it a bit of thought.

In the mean time, I suggest something. We're all about firearms on this forum. But no firearm is as effective as it should be if its user is not in good physical shape. We don't need to be in navy SEAL shape, but we should all be in good enough shape to at least run a few miles. I suggest that we all look at ourselves and start shaping up. I see way too many people at gun shows who are just terribly overweight. Can't do much with 50 pounds of gelatin around your waist! Good luck!

Hmmm.....I think complaining about overweight people is off-topic. Don't be suprised to see this thread locked soon.

While it is off topic and the OP's hard times theory may be far fetched, some of what he says is very true....I crack up at all the guys that are big into firearms self-defense, but are so overweight and/or out of shape that they likely couldn't run around the perimiter of their own house and then fire a decent group into a silhoutte target at reasonable gun fighting distances.

Condition White gets people killed. Condition Red is dangerous.

Condition Yellow is healthy, and sane.

I forget where, but somebody said, "if I told you on Sept 10 that somebody would crash into the Towers tomorrow, would you have called me paranoid? Probably, right?"

In other words:

- while understanding that the odds may be very slim that something unbelievable will happen, recognize that crazy things CAN happen

- prepare

- keep your eyes open

- don't forget along the way that the reason we do all of this is to preserve health and happiness. It is counterproductive to forget what a healthy and happy life is like while obsessing over what may happen. Don't slip into Condition Red.

PS- yes. Exercise is GOOD. Whether you're in a tinfoil marathon, or just trying to see your kids grow up... Do it.

They are panic buying because they are freaking out. Same as when people empty shelves of bottled water and toilet paper when there is a hoax disaster prediction. Pure fear.

Time for the tinfoil hats.

You'll have to forgive me, but I don't know what that means. I've seen the saying before, so I would appreciate your assistance.

I'll suggest something as well. Go have some eggnog, be merry, and enjoy the holidays

I will be! I'll be eating and drinking like a freak tonight! I just got through singing and dancing with the kids. Now, with that said, I also try to keep my body in shape. I may not be able to defend myself or my loved ones without a properly conditioned body.

I think complaining about overweight people is off-topic.

Not complaining friend. Just pointing something out that is, hopefully, useful for all of us to think about. We are living in strange times. I felt safer when there was a Soviet Union opposing us. I feel a bit funny about my some of my fellow Americans. With that said, there's no panic with me. I just think that if we're going to talk about firearms and defense, we should look first to caring for our bodies. Make them work in conjunction, if needed.

Tin foil hat refers to extreme paranoia, usually from government. IE: to the people who wear tin-foil hats to "block CIA signals" from the brain.

LOL You haven't been paying attention . You should see how some of those fat guys shoot . They don't need to chase you down, or tuck and roll . Go ahead and under estimate ! :)

It's those damned large capacity forks and spoons. Nobody needs forks and spoons that big. We should outlaw them so no one will get fat.

having water and toilet paper are handy. People forget our system of food and supplies is very thin. Having lived through a few hurricanes etc i know how fast stores empty out and things spiral out of control.

being prepared is never stupid. how many of you keep a spare key for your car or extra meds that are important somewhere. You dont ever plan to lose your car key or run out of the meds that keep you alive but things do happen.

I think the price gouging by retailers is more alarming than the public going out and buying items.

You know why eggnog is a holiday tradition? Because if we drank it year round, we'd all be fat!

Guns are actually the reason I am going to the gym now and have stopped eating fast food. Every new gun I buy, there's one number on Form 4473 that keeps going up...I want it to be down by the time I buy my next one. I've put on about 40 lb. in the past 2 years or so...

The last time I was on Miami beach, I walked slowly so I could enjoy the sight of all those babes lying in the sun. But then, some folks aren't affected by such scenery...chris3

LOL! Same with me, but through different analysis. I spent so much time thinking about the perfect defense rifle that I started thinking about my primary defense weapon....me! And so you know where I'm coming from, my rifle of choice is a Yugo M48.

I love all my heavy set shooting buddies. I hope no one took offense, as I am only offering encouragement. The most dangerous guy on my range is a 65 year old guy who is at least 100 pounds overweight! But I'll tell you, if you're within 400 yards of him and his 22-250 then you are in deep poo-poo! Still, I think we should all take steps to be fit. Things are very funny right about now in America. It's a good idea to start looking at out waistlines!:)

yes, physical fitness is important, but a little off topic here

We don't need to be in navy SEAL shape, but we should all be in good enough shape to at least run a few miles.

That's a laudable goal that is not achievable for many of us. The fact that we can't run a few miles doesn't mean we can't draw and hit a threat or that we can't fire from a point or that we can't walk and shoot. Being some sort of gym bunny has nothing to do with the ability to hit a target.
