I have been shooting for four years.

Having excellent vision, reading a few books, lots a rounds downrange plus hanging out here picking up pointers I became a decent shot while standing still in a stall all on my own.

In October of last year I took an introductory class at a local range called "Intro to autoloaders 1".

The class was geared toward proper gun handling skills. Grip, sight picture, trigger pull, drawing from a holster were covered.

After the class we were invited to shoot with the instructer the two or three times a month he holds shoots. Kind of like a club shoot. It is geared toward real world defensive skills mixed with IDPA gun game style scenerios.

The instruction over the last year has been revolutionary in its effect on my skills. Having a knowledgeable instructer watching you as you shoot scenerios giving you feedback on your performance is invaluable. The constant re-enforcment of the fundamentals has kept me from developing bad habits and proper technique is becoming second nature.

Sometimes we shoot with the timer as in IDPA etc...I would frequently shoot stages clean or be down one but was unhappy with the lack of speed. Everyone admonished me early on, work on fundamentals and proper technique, the speed will come.

One year later the results are dramatic. Newbies sometimes ask me advice not realizing I am not that far removed from them in experience. And best of all I get to spend time with a whole new batch of friends doing one of my favorite activities.

You're on to something.

I can second the notion that training pays off. I grew up hunting, but really came into my own in the service where I was able to get training consistently and more intensive in nature as I progressed. Made a very profound difference. I must confess to not keeping it up for several years now, but my wife and I are going to get into TDI's classes this spring. Her first "real" training and a refresher for me so I can re-establish the fundamentals and take some more classes in summer and fall.

I'm actually looking and saving for some classes for my wife and myself. She is just now starting to learn how to use and handle firearms, and I've been shooting off and on since I was a small child, but we both will need to learn how to FIGHT with those guns. I can kick some butt at the range, but paper doesn't shoot back ;)
