Im getting a Law Enforcement M-4 Patrolmen carbine with 16" M4 profile barrel with A-2 flash hider, A-3 upper with removable carry handle with 6 position telestock. is this a good gun? and how much should I expect to pay for this weapon?

Sounds like a fine firearm to me if it's the model I'm thinking of (no catalog handy on the desk at the moment). I'd say no more than $900? I think most of the basic, standard Bushmaster variants at my store listed for about $850-$800 w/o taxes. Your mileage may vary. If you feel the store charges too much, find a llegit ower price and get them to match it, or buy it elsewhere and FFL it in.

Take a look at the Rock River - same basic rifle in the LE Tactical with R4 barrel and standard NM trigger for less money. Bushmaster is a nice rifle also and you can't go wrong with either. Colt's are expensive in the M4 for what they offer.

You will be happy with the Bushmaster. If you go with any other brand, make sure it has a chrome lined barrel.

Chrome lining only makes it easier to clean and makes corrosion more difficult to establish itself when one goes extended periods of time without cleaning (aka military rifles).

But isn't it amazing how there are those, that are still shooting some Mil-Surp rifles that don't have chrome lined bores or chambers. :p

Though that doesn't mean non-chrome lined stuff is worthless. Chrome lining just adds a little more ease and slack for the lazy at the expense of a bit of accuracy. A lot of people seem to have justified and documented (and some superstitious) methods for breaking in chromoly and stainless steel barrels.

Instructions for chrome-lined barrels: shoot it out of the box, clean it when you want, you lazy arse. That applies to me. I'll buy a non-chrome lined, barreled gun in a heartbeat. I just don't happen to have one yet. :)

Cavalry: Looks like a fine piece, you'll have fun!

I have said it once and I will say it again........"Commie gun, commie ammo. Merican' gun, Merican' ammo."

Stick to that rule and you should do fine. Ok you can substitute Merican' with western but you get the point.

my stag arms rifle shoots wolf .223 like no tomorrow. :D

y stag arms rifle shoots wolf .223 like no tomorrow.

Just give it time.

Actually some AR's etc. will do just fine but I have seen enough lock up that I will not use Wolf ammo in my American firearms. AK's, SKS etc. I will run it all day long.

I would just make a habit of keeping a dowl or rod with you if you are shooting Wolf Ammo through your AR. You may never need it but you will be happy you have it if you do.

When the barrel on my Bushmaster starts to go out and lose accuracy, do I just buy another barrel and install it myself? Or will I have to get it done by a smith? And about ammunition, Federal or Wolf?

You can swap the barrel with the proper tools.

Federal/Lake City, Winchester, PMC, Wolf(my last choice), Black Hills, Radway Green, Silver Bear take your pick.

Wolf = cheapest to shoot.
Old Wolf ammo had a laquer coating that could gum up your gun once it gets up to operational temperatures; this coating is not present on new Wolf production ammo. Most everyone agrees Wolf leaves more residue and dirties up your gun faster. People argue back and forth if the steel casing is bad for your ejector. Some people swear by Wolf as plinking ammo; some people won't touch it with your gun.

Federal Lake City XMxxxPD loose packaged ammo=second cheapest to shoot.
Milspec stuff supposedly. Some people argue that you'll get squib loads now and then. More people suggest you hand-sort the stuff and pick out any "questionables". I have shot half a box of 500 XM193PD flawlessly after picking out 29 "questionables". People have shot entire 1000 round boxes without handsorting, with no problems.

Remington UMC= cheap to shoot.
They're usually selling 55gr 200 round boxes for around $40 a shot, individually boxed. I shot a box with no problems.

Remanufactuered Black Hills stuff is supposed to be available at a huge discount compared to their premium stuff, I've heard that the cheaper stuff is equal in quality to the premium stuff. Black Hills has always been associated with quality.

Also worth mention is Winchester makes M193 stuff that is...Q3131A? Something to that extent, milspec too.

If you shoot out a barrel, drop in a new one. You can do it yourself or get a gunsmith to do it. Bare minimum DIY, all you really need is a multi-wrench with barrel lugs that can remove the barrel nut. You can purhase the receiver blocks, handguard removal tool, and other AR-specific tools, but you can get by if you're crafty and good at mickeymousing things.

I'm not going to get into the Chrome Lined vs Non Chrome lined arguement, nor was the statement intended to endorse chrome lined barrels exclusively. I've owned and built both crome lined and standard barrel ARs. In fact my 9mm AR has has at least 1K through it with no problems...and it isn't chrome lined. On the other hand my little AR "pistol" in 5.56 is chrome lined and I'm just as happy with her.

However, I did make the statement to "inform" Calvary that Bushmasters come with chrome lined barrels. If you get a comparable priced AR, you need to make sure that it has a chrome lined barrel in order to have an equal value.
